No. 21 Hoosiers Fall at Kentucky

Bloomington, Ind. - The No. 21 Indiana men's swimming and diving team fell at Kentucky, 119-112, on Thursday in the Lancaster Aquatic Center. Kentucky won nine of the 13 events to claim the victory. IU drops to 1-1 on the season, while Kentucky improves to 1-1.
Indiana started out of the gates quickly as they claimed the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of senior Matt Leach, sophomore Kevin Swander, junior Murph Halasz and senior Mike Payne was first with a time of 3:24.45. IU's `B' relay of sophomore Mike Jones, sophomore Hank Baldwin, freshman Scott Tanner and freshman Lee Houchin was second at 3:27.39.
Following the relay, the Wildcats claimed first place in the next eight events to propel them to victory.
The Hoosiers tried to get back into contention late with 1-2 finishes in the 500-yard freesyle and 200-yard breaststroke events. Freshman Colin Russell continued his solid season by taking first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:35.82. Junior Richard Bryant was right behind him in second at 4:36.26.
Sophomore Kevin Swander won the 200-yard breaststroke. The Greenwood, Ind., native went 2:07.49 to record a season-best time. Junior Niles Madison was just five-tenths of a second behind his teammate in second at 2:07.97.
IU would fall just short of a victory after claiming the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the meet. The Hoosier `A' relay of Payne, senior Claes Andersson, junior David Winck and Russell won with a time of 3:04.86.
Junior Ryan Fagan took second in both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native scored 289.80 on the three-meter and a career-best 297.97 on the one-meter. Kentukcy's Mario Rodriguez won both diving events.
Bryant and Russell took second-place finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, respectively. Bryant went 9:26.63 finishing less than a second behind Kentucky's Steven Manely. Russell finished one-tenth of a second back of Kentucky's Daniel Cruz with a time of 1:40.38.
Senior Claes Andersson finished second in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freesyle events. The senior captain was second in the 50 with a time of 20.91, while taking runner-up in the 100 at 46.67.
Junior Murph Halasz had a nice time in the early season of 1:48.45 in the 200-yard butterfly. The Richmond, Va., native took second, while Bryant was third for the Hoosiers. Sophomore Mike Jones was second in the 200-yard backstroke for the Hoosiers with a time of 1:50.38. Madison came in third behind Jones at 1:53.11.
The Hoosiers will continue their southern road trip on Saturday when they travel to No. 12 Tennessee. The meet is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the UT Aquatic Center.
