Hoosiers Lose at Michigan St.

East Lansing, Mich. - Opening a two-game road swing in the state of Michigan, the Indiana volleyball team fell to Michigan State 30-24, 30-23, 30-23. IU falls to 9-13 overall and 2-9 in the Big Ten, while the Spartans improve to 14-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play.Senior Melissa Brewer and Monique Pritz turned in outstanding performances despite the outcome. Pritz finished with a season-high 13 kills, hitting .409. Brewer ended the evening with 10 kills, her seventh consecutive match reaching the 10-kill mark, to go along with five digs and four block assists.
In addition, sophomore Ashley White pounded eight kills in her first collegiate start.
MSU opened a 13-6 lead in the opener before the Hoosiers responded with an 8-5 run to cut the deficit to four points at 18-14. The Spartans regained their seven-point lead at 23-16, but IU would not go away. A service ace by junior Victoria Zimmerman coupled with a kill by Pritz narrowed the gap to 24-19.
Back-to-back kills by Brewer and Pritz moved Indiana to within four points at 26-22, but Michigan State halted the Hoosier run and closed out game one, 30-24.
In the game, Pritz led IU with seven kills and White added five kills and one block solo. Junior Beth Heimann led the way defensively with a game-high six digs.
Despite a late 8-2 run, the Hoosiers dropped game two, 30-23. Brewer spurred the rally with three kills and one block assist, finishing the game with five kills and four block assists. Pritz matched Brewer with four block assists of her own in game two.
Needing a victory to continue the match, IU came out of the gates building its largest lead of the match at 7-4. However, the Spartans stormed back, using a 10-2 run to take a 14-9 lead.
Kills by Pritz, Zimmerman and junior Katie Pollom stopped the MSU rally and moved the Hoosiers back to within two points. Once again, Michigan State had an answer, netting eight of the next 11 points en route to a 22-16 lead. IU had one more run left, slashing the Spartan lead to 23-20, but that is as close as Indiana would get, losing the game, 30-23, and the match, 3-0.
Christina Archibald terminated eight kills, snapping her incredible streak of matches with 10-plus kills at 32.
The Hoosiers complete their Michigan road swing against Michigan on Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
