University Park, Pa. - After dropping a three-game match to Ohio State Friday night, the road did not get any easier for the Indiana volleyball team as they headed to University Park for a match against No. 11 Penn State. The Nittany Lions (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) showed why they sit just outside the top 10 in the nation, knocking off the Hoosiers (9-6, 2-2 Big Ten) in three games, 30-20, 30-17, 30-15.Leading the Hoosiers were Beth Heimann, who finished with a match-high 12 digs, and Christina Archibald, who terminated 12 kills, reaching the 10-kill mark for the 26th consecutive match.
Coming off last night's loss, IU came out looking to change its fortunes in game one. Two kills by Monique Pritz and a kill and a block solo by Melissa Brewer gave the Hoosiers an early 7-6 lead. PSU responded with a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead and Indiana never recovered, dropping game one, 30-20.
In the game, Brewer moved into second place on IU's career list when she recorded her 394th career block assist.
Trailing by one game, the Hoosiers shot out of the gate in the second game, scoring seven of the game's first ten points for a 7-3 lead. However, the Nittany Lions used a four-point run to knot the game at 7-7 and continued their redhot play by scoring seven of the next nine points on their way to a 14-9 lead.
A block assist by Pollom and Victoria Zimmerman closed the gap to three, at 14-11, and moved Pollom into the sixth spot on Indiana's career list for total blocks. Penn State stopped the IU rally and extended its lead to 20-12 en route to a 30-17 victory. Archibald led the Hoosiers with six kills in the game.
PSU closed out the match with a 30-23 victory in game three. The Lions ran off to an early 7-2 lead and the Hoosiers could not get closer the rest of the way as the Big Ten leaders moved to a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
Up next, the Hoosiers return home next weekend hosting Michigan and Michigan State. IU will face the Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and the Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
