All-Big Ten Honors Announced (11-13-03)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Big Ten regular season champion Indiana men's soccer team placed eight players on the 2003 All-Big Ten Conference teams and Jerry Yeagley earned his eighth league Coach-of-the-Year award on Thursday night at the annual tournament banquet. The Hoosiers had five first-team selections, one second-team honoree and three All-Freshman team members, including Co-Freshman of the Year Jed Zayner.
Junior forward Ned Grabavoy, junior midfielder Danny O'Rourke and sophomore defender Drew Moor were all three unanimous selections to the first team. The only other unanimous pick was Michigan's Knox Cameron, the Big Ten Player of the Year. In addition, junior goalkeeper Jay Nolly and sophomore midfielder Brian Plotkin were both first-team honorees.
Grabavoy, who was named a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Award on Wednesday, tied with Cameron to lead the conference in scoring during the regular season 13 points overall. He was also the league assist leader overall with nine on the season. Grabavoy is making his second straight appearance as a unanimous selection on the firs tteam.
O'Rourke and Nolly are also second-time first-team honorees. O'Rourke, a Hoosier co-captain, has started every match he has played in this season at the defensive midfield position for IU. Nolly sports an 0.68 goals-against average overall, which ranks 14th nationally. He has also posted eight shutouts this season.
Moor and Plotkin made their first appearances on the the All-Big Ten first team. Moor was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year last season at Furman before transferring to IU . He has started every match has played in and scored his first goal of the season last Saturday against Penn State. Plotkin won Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2002. He is IU's second-leading scorer with 17 points and ranked in the top 10 among Big Ten players in goals, points and assists.
For the first time ever, the Big Ten Conference named an All-Freshman team, and IU had three players on it. In addition to Zayner, forward Jacob Peterson and defender Julian Dieterle made the team. Peterson was also selected to the All-Big Ten second team. Peterson is the Hoosiers' third-leading scorer with 13 points, 11 of which he scored in Big Ten play. Dieterle and Zayner have both started every match this season on defense.
Yeagley led the Hoosiers to their seventh-straight Big Ten regular season title and 10th overall this season en route Coach-of-the-Year honors. The IU coach has won the award a total of eight times (1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001. 2002 amd 2003).
The Hoosiers open Big Ten Tournament action tomorrow when they face No. 5 seed Wisconsin at 5 p.m. The Badgers defeated No. 4 Ohio State today, 2-0, to advance to the semifinals. No. 6 Penn State beat No. 3 Michigan State, 2-1. The Nittany Lions will meet No. 7 seed Northwestern, who upset No. 2 seed Michigan, 2-1 at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
