Hoosiers Come Up Short Against No. 24 Minnesota

Box ScoreMinneapolis, Minn. - Looking to sweep the season series against Minnesota, the Indiana volleyball team came up short in its second match against the 24th-ranked Golden Gophers 30-22, 30-25, 30-17. IU drops to 11-16 overall and 4-12 in the Big Ten, while the second-place Golden Gophers move to 19-9 on the season and 12-4 in conference play.
"Minnesota did a nice job tonight," said Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller. "They did a real nice job offensively. Our defense and passing was strong, but we couldn't terminate on the offensive end."
Junior Victoria Zimmerman turned in an outstanding performance, delivering 31 assists, 12 digs and six kills. It was the Barrington, Ill., native's team-leading seventh double-double of the season.
Additionally, junior Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) recorded 10 kills and seven digs. She has reached the 10-kill mark in 43 of the last 44 matches she has played in.
The Hoosiers could not continue the momentum they gained after last night's victory at Iowa in the opening game. The Gophers built a 14-8 lead and extended their lead to 11 points at 28-17 before taking the opener, 30-22.
Senior Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) paced the Hoosiers with five kills in the game and junior Beth Heimann (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) compiled six digs.
In a back-and-forth game two that featured 10 ties and four lead changes, IU ran off to an early four-point lead at 11-7. Archibald and junior Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) helped Indiana to its early advantage with two kills each. After a 9-4 run gave Minnesota a 16-15 lead, the teams traded the next 12 points before the Hoosiers knotted the match at 22-22.
However, the Golden Gophers were too strong down the stretch, capitalizing on three Hoosier errors to take a 27-23 lead. IU never recovered, dropping game two, 30-25.
In the game, Pollom and Archibald nailed four kills apiece with Zimmerman adding 11 assists, four digs and three kills.
The Golden Gophers grabbed an 11-5 lead to open up the third game and never trailed the rest of the way, winning the final game and closing out the match, 30-17.
Defensively, Heimann led the Hoosiers with 14 digs and freshman Lindsay Cochrane (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added 11 digs. Archibald and Brewer led the team with three block assists each.
Up next, IU returns home for a weekend series against No. 25 Illinois and Northwestern. The Hoosiers face the Fighting Illini on Fri., Nov. 21 and the Wildcats on Sat., Nov. 22. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
