Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana University volleyball standout Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) has been named to the 2003 Academic All-District V Second Team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)."This is quite an honor to receive this award because it really shows how much Coach Weismiller pushes academics," said Brewer. "This is something that I cherish more than athletic awards."
The senior middle blocker was a member of the first team the past two seasons and was one of 12 players selected to the first and second teams this season.
On the court, IU's all-time block assists record-holder leads the team in hitting percentage (.301), block assists (113) and total blocks (119) and sits second on the team with 342 kills and 3.42 kills per game.
Brewer is closing in on two more milestones, needing 25 blocks to become the school's all-time total blocks leader and 39 kills to break Indiana's all-time kills record. Brewer currently sits second on both career lists.
"Melissa has achieved greatness both on the court and in the classroom," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "She should be recognized, and I'm not surprised she earned this honor. She has worked so hard academically, and she is one of the top players in the conference. I'm so pleased that she has been honored with this award."
