Bloomington, Ind. - Team Mayer captured the 2003 IU Ryder Cup for the second straight season after tying Team Brewer, 6-6.
In the fifth annual Ryder Cup match, Team Mayer needed the six points it scored to retain the cup. Holding a 2-1 lead after day one and a 3 1/2-2 1/2 lead after day two, Team Mayer managed to net 2 1/2 points in the six single matches on the final day.
The Ryder Cup is an intrasquad match between two teams coached by Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer and assistant coach Josh Brewer. The match was scored by each team competing head-to-head against the other in either singles or doubles matches. Friday, Oct. 31 consisted of three four ball (better ball) matches. The teams squared off in three foursome (alternate shot) matches on Sat., Nov. 1 and ended the Cup with six singles matches on Sun., Nov. 2.
Coach Mayer's victorious team featured junior Jeff Overton, sophomores Oren Hodak, Brad Marek and Scott Seibert and freshmen David Butwell and Tad Sacheck.
Team Brewer featured seniors Ryan Cassidy and Kirk Wood, juniors Heath Peters and Mike Birkenfeld, sophomore Aaron Walters and freshman Andy Temple.
