Seven Hoosiers Named to Academic All-Big Ten Team

Bloomington, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference released its annual Academic All-Big Ten selections for fall sports on Wednesday and seven members of the volleyball squad earned a spot on the team.
Seniors Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North), Beth Heimann (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont), Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central), Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East) represent IU on the team along with junior Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and sophomore Mandy Eberle (Sussex, Wis./Wis. Lutheran).
This marks the third consecutive year Brewer, Hill, Pollom and Pritz have earned the award and the second straight season Heimann and Zimmerman have been honored. Eberle received her first nod on the team.
Overall, the Big Ten recognizes a total of 559 fall sports athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference Team. The list of honored student-athletes features 47 men's and 93 women's cross country runners, 49 field hockey players, 132 football players, 51 men's soccer and 122 women's soccer athletes and 65 volleyball players.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers in the classroom was the women's cross country team with 14 nominations, followed by the field hockey, football and men's soccer with nine each.
Rounding out the Hoosier fall sports in number of Academic All-Big Ten honorees were women's soccer with eight and men's cross country and volleyball with seven apiece.
