COLUMBUS, Ohio - Indiana junior Ned Grabavoy was selected to the National Soccer Coaches'Association of America's All-America first team, the organization announced on Friday. The IU co-captain is now a two-time honoree after making the second team in 2002.
Grabavoy, who is from New Lenox, Ill., and graduated from Lincoln-Way High School, has led the Hoosiers in scoring this season with 31 points on 10 goals and 11 assists. He was both a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and a first-team All-Great Lakes Region pick for the second consecutive year. The junior was also one of 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, which honors the nation's best collegiate soccer player.
Grabavoy has spent the last three weeks representing the United States on the Under-20 national team competing in the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates. The team won its group and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to Argentina, 2-1, in overtime.
Grabavoy's honor marks the seventh straight season, dating back to 1996, that an Indiana player has attained All-America status. Hoosier players
have earned a total of 48 All-America honors.
After defeating Santa Clara, 1-0, on Friday night in Columbus, Ohio, the Hoosiers play St. John's in the national championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. Grabavoy and teammate Drew Moor, who has also been playing with the U-20 team, will likely return for tomorrow's championship match.
