BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University head soccer coach Jerry Yeagley has announced committments from eight outstanding high school players to attend IU. Kyle Brabender (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory), Julian Dieterle (Elgin, Ill./Larkin HS), Christopher Munroe (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS), Jacob Peterson (Portage, Mich./IMG Academy-Edison High School), Kevin Robson (St. Peters, Mo./Chaminade HS), Greg Stevning (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), Charley Traylor (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Jedidah Zayner (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS) will join the Hoosiers in the fall of 2003.
"We consider this a banner class with very good balance," Yeagley said. "These eight players are proven winners. They come in with winning habits and from winning traditions. They are outstanding leaders. This past season, we had no freshman starters. Next year, though, we could have four or more new players in the lineup. This class is very important and has a unique opportunity to have a impact on our team next year."
The incoming class includes one goalkeeper, four defenders, two forwards and a midfielder.
"One of our primary needs was to bolster the defense," Yeagley said. "We feel we have several recruits who could help immediately in a defensive role. Zayner, Dieterle, Stevning and Brabender have all been outstanding defenders on their respective teams.
"With the loss of (Ryan) Mack and (Pat) Noonan, we're very hopeful that Kevin Robson, who led his Chaminade team to back-to-back state championships, and Jacob Peterson, who was selected to our U-17 Men's National Team, can help immediately in the attack."
Three student-athletes are currently seniors at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
"We also feel very good about getting the top players from our own state," Yeagley said. "This year we have three of the best from North Central's State Championship team (in Traylor, Stevning and Munroe). In (Chris) Munroe, we have a top goalkeeper. Stevning anchored their defense and Traylor was the midfield dynamo for North Central and Coach Jerry Little."
