IU Tops No. 18 Brown, 5-3

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Indiana women's water polo team improved to 5-4 on the season, after a 5-3 victory over No. 18 Brown at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday.
The No. 13 Hoosiers were led by junior Melissa Pietras and senior Kristin Stanford, who each scored two goals on three shots a piece. Freshman Emily Schmitt added Indiana's final goal at the 3:32 mark to cap off the Hoosier victory.
"I was very pleased with our defensive effort tonight," said Indiana coach Barry King. "Pietras did a great job of working Brown on the counter-attack. It's good to see that we can win a variety of different ballgames."
After trailing by two goals to start the game, Stanford found the back of the net on a backhand goal with 1:19 remaining in the first. Stanford's two goals extend the Hoosiers' all-time leading scorer's career total to 199. Pietras scored both Hoosier goals in the second period, to take IU into halftime, leading 3-2.
The Hoosiers scored five unanswered goals and looked to shutout the Bears in the final three quarters of the game. But a controversial 4-meter penalty was called on Indiana goalkeeper Jessica Goldner, and gave Brown a one-on-one try at the goal. Although, Goldner blocked the penalty shot, the ball dropped passed the Hoosier sophomore and floated past the goalline for Brown's third and final goal of the game.
On the day, Goldner stopped 10-of-20 shots, while only allowing three goals, her second-lowest goal allowance this season.
"I thought Jessie did a good job in goal today," said King. "I was really pleased with her performance."
Due to a severe winter storm warning, that could possibly bring a foot of snow to the Princeton area, gametimes have been moved up 30 minutes for Sunday's final day of the Princeton Invitational. The Hoosiers will face No. 19 Harvard, Sunday at 10:00 a.m., and will cap off the tournament, playing No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara at 2:00 p.m.
