Peterson "Overcomes" Nerves

PRINCETON, N.J. - Krista Peterson gets nervous every time she walks into Denunzio Pool. She was nervous last February at the Princeton Invitational. Nerves struck again at the Eastern Championships last year held in Princeton, and yes, Saturday, the Portland, Ore., native was nervous again.
But nerves, at least for Peterson at Princeton, are good to have.
Peterson led the No. 13 Indiana water polo team to a 13-3 victory over Bucknell Saturday, in the first game of the Princeton Invitational. The sophomore netted each of the three shots she attempted while assisting on one goal, and recording an assist as well.
Almost one year to the date (Feb. 17), Peterson recorded her career-high five goals against Princeton in the Tigers' tournament last year. At the 2002 Eastern Championships, she led the Hoosiers in scoring, averaging three goals a game, in three of the final four games at Princeton.
"I just think it's something about the atmosphere here that makes me nervous," said Peterson. "Walking in today reminded me a lot about last year. I wish there was an explanation why I seem to play so good here, but there's not."
During the 2003 campaign however, Peterson has been struggling to find her shot, as she had only scored four goals on 22 shots entering Saturday's game.
Indiana head coach Barry King knew it was just a matter of time before Peterson came around for the 4-4 Hoosiers. Last year, Peterson began her freshman year scoring on just 3-of-50 shots, before breaking out at the Princeton Invitational. She would go on to record 50 goals - one of three Hoosiers to eclipse the 50-goal mark in 2003.
"We're continuing to work with Krista in taking advantage of the opportunities that we create for her," said King.
Clearly the underlining theme of Saturday's tournament opener against Bucknell was "opportunity." Many Hoosiers had an opportunity to take full advantage of their minutes in the pool.
Senior Sarah Butler recorded one of the best, if not the best, defensive performances in her career. The Worthington, Ohio, native doubled her career-high in steals with six. Butler also netted the one shot she took as well.
"I played pretty aggressive today and anticipated their passes," said Butler. "We were focused on pressing them on defense and getting in the passing lanes, and that's what we did."
Freshman Rachel Lowe scored her first goal of her young Hoosier career. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native netted Indiana's 10th goal with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter.
Junior Melissa Pietras tied her career high with three assists - her second consecutive three-assist game.
Saturday also marked a day of "milestone watching." Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner recorded her 200th career save for the Cream and Crimson. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native ended with six saves on the day, extending her current career total to 205.
Senior All-American Kristin Stanford netted two goals on four shots against Bucknell. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 197 career goals, and is just three goals shy of establishing a 200-goal club at Indiana. Deb Simone, Indiana's second all-time scorer, netted just 139 goals in her Hoosier career.
Indiana will look to surpass the .500 mark Saturday afternoon as the Hoosiers will take on No. 18 Brown as 3:45 p.m. EST.
