Madison, Wis. - The Indiana men's tennis team continued its roll with a 5-2 win over Wisconsin. The Hoosiers' winning streak has reached eight, and they are 2-0 in the Big Ten.
“Coming in, the guys knew Wisconsin wasn’t as strong as some of the teams we have played this year,” Indiana interim head coach Matt Pledger said. “I was disappointed with the team's overall intensity level. My goal for this team is to play with the same intensity that we practice with, and we didn’t do that today. I am always happy with a win though. To be 8-0 at this point in the season really says a lot for how much these guys have improved.”
Indiana started out hot by sweeping the doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead. Indiana has won the doubles point in seven of their eight matches, including the last six in a row.
Senior Zach Held and sophomore Ryan Recht won at the No. 1 spot for the second straight day. The Hoosier tandem downed Alexander Kasarov and David Hippee of Wisconsin, 8-5. Held and Recht upped their mark to 6-2 on the season.
Indiana's No. 2 doubles team of freshman Viktor Libal and senior Petr Novotny won their third straight match. The pair downed Scott Green and Jordan Raemisch, 9-7. Libal and Novotny are also 6-2 this season, all at the No. 2 doubles position.
Freshman John Stone and sophomore Jakub Praibis rebounded from their first loss of the season against Northwestern to down the Badger's No. 3 duo. Stone and Praibis beat Alex Conti and Blake Baratz, 8-4. The Hoosier duo is 7-1 on the season playing at the No. 3 spot.
After dropping his first dual match of the season on Saturday, Praibis regained his winning form as he downed Kasarov, 6-0, 6-2. Praibis is now 9-3 this season and 5-1 at the No. 1 singles position.
Like Praibis, Libal also rebounded from a loss against Northwestern with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over Wisconsin's Hippee at the No. 2 spot. The win bumped Libal's overall record to 7-6, and he is 5-3 this spring.
Novotny continued his torrid streak at No. 3 singles against the Badgers. He downed Blake Baratz, 6-4, 6-2, to pick up his sixth straight victory. He is now 7-1 this season all at the No. 3 singles spot.
Zach Held won his second singles match of the weekend. He beat Ward Bortz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Held improved his record to 6-2 this season.
