The No. 13 Hoosiers will now look to capture first place in the tournament with a win over No. 10 UC-Santa-Barbara at 2:00 p.m. EST.
Although Indiana All-America senior Kristin Stanford eclipsed the 200-career goal mark on 3-of-3 shooting Sunday, the spotlight belonged to sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner.
Goldner, a native of Los Altos Hills, Calif., was a perfect 13-of-13 shots-on-goal. The Harvard offense managed only five shots in the first half, due to a tough IU defense, which recorded 13 steals on the day.
"Harvard gave Jessie some looks today and she did a great job of keeping the ball out of the cage," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We played well on both ends of the pool today and it will be important to carry over this performance to the Santa Barbara game this afteroon."
King elected to pull Goldner from the cage at the 5:27 mark in the fourth quarter. Many Hoosier water polo followers would immediately question the decision, due to Goldner being the lone keeper on the roster.
Freshman Bridget McKeon, who scored Indiana's very first goal in the game, and has been seeing practice time in the cage during pre-game warm-ups, donned the No. 1 cap and entered as the Indiana goalie for the remainder of the game. Just 23 seconds after McKeon entered, Harvard's Arin Keyser found the back of the net, breaking up the Hoosier shutout. Keyser would also score Harvard's second goal at the 1:52 mark in the fourth. McKeon would go on to record one save on three shots.
Krista Peterson, who has historically been an offensive threat while playing at DeNunzio Pool in her short career, scored on her lone attempt of the day, while assisting on three other Hoosier goals.
Once McKeon put the Hoosiers on the board in the first, Stanford pulled up from 6-meters off a breakaway, and found the back of the net for her 200th career goal as a Hoosier. Stanford, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, ended the day Sunday with 202 in her career, which currently sets her an amazing 63 goals ahead of Indiana's second-leading all-time scorer, Deb Simone's 139.
IU built on its 3-0 lead after one period with four goals in the second. Senior Jamie Marley scored first in the second quarter, while junior Melissa Pietras, Stanford, and Peterson all followed suit. Freshman Emily Schmitt netted the Hoosiers' eighth and final goal of the game at the 3:34 mark in the third quarter.
