Newton Named Big Ten Co-Player of Week

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana senior forward Jeff Newton is the Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 16. Newton shares the honor with Wisconsin senior guard Kirk Penney.

Newton has been the Hoosiers' most consistent performer over the last three games, averaging 21.3 points and nine rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the floor. For the past week, the 6-9 senior forward averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds per game en route to his league-leading ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season. Newton has twice as many double-doubles as any other league player after posting just one double-double in his first three seasons in Bloomington. Newton's 10 double-doubles are the most by a Hoosier since Kirk Haston had 13 in 2000-01.

Newton entered this year shooting 61 percent from the free throw line for his career, but he has hit 17 of his last 20 and 28 of his last 33 from the charity stripe. He is also the league's leading rebounder (8.9 ppg) while he ranks 10th in scoring (14.8 ppg) and sixth in blocks (1.41).

This is Newton's first Big Ten Player of the Week honor, and it marks the third time this season that a Hoosier has earned the league's top weekly distinction - joining Bracey Wright (Dec. 2, Jan. 6) and Tom Coverdale (Dec. 9). This also marks the second straight year that three different IU players have earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors in the same season. In 2001-02, Dane Fife (Nov. 26), Jared Jeffries (Dec. 10 and Jan. 14) and Jarrad Odle (Feb. 11) were the honorees.
