Tuning Up For Big Tens
This is the last week of competition before the conference meets and marks the first week of a two-week stay for the Hoosier women in Bloomington. IU hosts the 2003 Big Ten Women's Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2 at Gladstein Fieldhouse. The men's meet is also March 1 and 2 and will be held at the University of Illinois' Armory Track.
In This Week's Polls...
The Hoosier women's team is ranked No. 10 in this week's Trackwire 25 Power Rankings. Additionally, the team is ranked eighth in the Team Power Rankings, while the Hoosier men are 11th.
Wilson On His Way to NCAAs
Sophomore jumper Aarik Wilson will have the chance to improve on his fourth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships this season. Wilson automatically qualified for NCAAs with a leap of 16.56m (54-4.00) in the triple jump at last weekend's Cannon IV Classic. Wilson won the event, attained an indoor personal-best, set the meet record and jumped the second-best indoor distance in school history. The mark is also the fourth-best in the country this season.
Boone Double-Trouble
Senior Rachelle Boone has earned the right to compete at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships in both the 60m and 200m this season. in the 60m, Boone ran an automatic qualifying time of 7.26 at the Indiana Invitational, Friday, Feb. 7.
Last weekend at the Cannon IV Classic, she automatically qualifed for NCAAs in the 200m with a time of 23.60. Her time in the 60m ranks as the fourth-best in the nation this season while her 200m time ranks eighth nationally.
Carruthers NCAA Bound
Senior Danielle Carruthers has qualified for the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships. On Feb. 1 at Illinois, Carruthers ran the 60m hurdles in 8.16 seconds. The automatic qualifying mark is 8.17. Her time in the 60 hurdles is the third-fastest in the country this season. The NCAA meet is set for March 7-8, in Fayetteville, Ark. Carruthers is a seven-time All-American for IU and was last season's Big Ten Indoor Athlete of the Year.
More On Wilson
In addition to his performance in the triple jump, Aarik Wilson had a nice outing in the long jump. The Fallon, Nev., native jumped a personal-best of 7.61m on his way to a first-place finish and an NCAA provisional mark at the Cannon Classic. The distance ranks in the top 20 nationally this season. Wilson, who was the Big Ten Outdoor Freshman of the Year last season, finished runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor meet and in fourth at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Meet.
More On Boone
Rachelle Boone has added two records to her long list of accomplishments in this season. On Feb. 7 at the Indiana Invitational, Boone set a Gladstein Fieldhouse record in the 60m with a time of 7.26. On Feb. 1 at the Illinois Health Alliance Classic, she set an Armory Track record in the 60m with a time of 7.32.
Dalla Rosa Improving All The Time
Freshman thrower Andrea Dalla Rosa is making serious strides in her first collegiate season. Dalla Rosa has improved her shot put mark more than four feet over the last three weeks. At the Indiana Invitational, she threw a personal-best 15.50 meters (50-10.25), which also exceeded the NCAA Provisional mark of 15.20m. This distance ranks 24th in the country this indoor season and is the fourth-best among freshmen. At last weekend's Cannon IV Classic she won the event with throw of 15.28m, the second-best mark of her career.
Jefferson Hits Provisional In Mile
Sophomore John Jefferson ran a provisional mile time in the invitational event at the Indiana Invitational. on Feb. 7 He placed first with a time of 4:04.71. His time is the 16th-best in the country this season. Jefferson, who earned All-America honors in the event last season, has a personal-best time of 4:02.37.
Rodney Hollis Sets 600m Record
Junior Rodney Hollis set a new Indiana record in the 600m at the Indiana Invite lon Feb. 8. Hollis ran a time of 1:18.70, breaking the old record of 1:19.25 held by Ryan Huber.
Minton Has Career Day
Junior thrower Mike Minton had a career day on Feb. 7 at the Indiana Invitational. He threw a career-best 18.05 m (59-02.75) in the shot put. The distance met the NCAA Provisional mark and ranks 21st nationally this season.
