Hoosiers Get First Big Ten Road Win

Iowa City, Iowa - For the first time this season, the Hoosiers won against a Big Ten foe on the road. Indiana upended the Hawkeyes 79-63 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa Wednesday night. The Hoosiers improve to 16-9 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes fall to 13-9, 5-6 in the conference.Bracey Wright led the Hoosiers with 18 points and nine rebounds, but teammates Tom Coverdale, Jeff Newton and George Leach were not far behind. Coverdale hit five from beyond the arc en route to his 17 points while Newton had 16 in the victory. George Leach came through with 12 points for the Hoosiers.
Indiana owned the lead from the first basket, a fade away jumper from Newton, and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. IU was up by as many as 14 points in the first half and 17 points in the second stanza.
Coverdale dished out six assists in the victory while Newton added four of his own.
Coverdale also moves up in the career scoring at IU. He was the 33rd leading scorer entering Wednesday's contest and is now 29th behind Quinn Buckner. Coverdale has 1,103 career points. He also moves into a seventh-place tie for career steals with 135.
With his two three-pointers, Kyle Hornsby moves into a tie in three-point baskets with Damon Bailey. Hornsby has 166 career baskets from beyond the arc.
Newton's two blocks against the Hawkeyes leave him two blocks shy of breaking the IU record for career blocks. Currently, Alan Henderson holds the record with 213 and Newton now has 212.
Indiana travels to Champaign, Ill., for a Tues., Feb. 25 matchup with the Fighting Illini. Game time is set for 9 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN.
