Hoosiers Fall to Northwstern, 50-46

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana University women's basketball team dropped to 11-12 (4-9) on the season Thursday night, falling 50-46 to Northwestern (8-17, 3-11) in Evanston, Ill. Poor shooting and lack of intensity was the cause of the Hoosiers' first loss to the Wildcats in six games.
Hoosier senior Lisa Eckart led all scorers with 19 points, including five three pointers, which is an Indiana season high. IU's shooting as a whole struggled against the Wildcats, finishing just 15-of-58 from the field (26%) and 10-of-17 (59%) from the free throw line. Although Eckart was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, the rest of the Hoosiers shot a dismal 1-of-12 from three-point land.
"We have no consistency," said Indiana head coach Kathi Bennett. "We can have someone show up one game, and not show up for the next."
Indiana's two leading scorers, Jenny DeMuth and Cyndi Valentin, shot a combined 2-of-17 from the field Thursday and finished with five and four points, respectively.
Despite Indiana's shooting struggles, the Hoosiers fought Northwestern to the final buzzer. Trailing by 10 with just 1:50 remaining in the game, Eckart drained a three pointer to bring the Hoosiers within seven, 49-42. Seconds later, freshman April Williams, who played in her first contest in nine games due to a knee injury, deflected a Wildcat pass into the hands of senior Kristen Bodine, who took it down the floor for a Hoosier basket. With the score 49-44, Bodine was sent to the line for two free throws after an Eckart steal. The Martinsville, Ind., native made both shots and brought IU to within three, 49-46.
Throughout most of the second half, Indiana's intensity was at the liking of their Hoosier coach. However, in the first half, IU struggled to take control of the game, which according to Bennett, ultimately led to the Hoosier defeat.
"We had a poor first half. In the second half we had good intensity, but in the first, we did not have enough to beat Northwestern on the road," she said.
Indiana managed to hold Northwestern scoreless for 5:39 late in the first half. The Hoosiers however, netted only three points during the stretch and wound up trailing the Wildcats at half, 25-24.
For Indiana, Thursday night's 15 field goals marks a season low for IU. Despite the loss, Northwestern's 50 points was the least amount of points the Hoosiers have given up all season.
Indiana returns home to Assembly Hall Sunday, as the Hoosiers host the Michigan Wolverines at 2:00 p.m.
