Hoosiers Fall to Maryland in USF-Best Western Tournament Opener

Tampa, Fla. - The Indiana softball team played in its first of two games today against Maryland in the USF-Best Western Tournament. The Hoosiers fell to the Terrapins 2-1. IU drops to 3-3 on the year as Maryland extends its record to 3-3.
“Maryland is a good ball team,” head coach Sara Hayes said. “They did a little better than we did today, that was the difference. Their pitcher (Jessica Aditays) did a good job. She really affected our performance when we were on the bases. I liked our hustle and I liked our approach at bat. We are doing good things.”
Indiana threatened to score in the second inning as junior Dawn Ramynke (Placentia, Calif./Sonora) started off the inning with a single to right field. Junior pitcher Heather Stillians (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero) doubled up the right field line advancing Ramynke to third. With two outs freshman Lauren Hines (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) walked, loading the bases. The Hoosiers threat ended as Junior Kristine Dugan (Las Vegas, Nev./Taft JC) popped out to center field.
Maryland was the first to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning as left fielder Lauren Pollock hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Crystal Rizzuto, giving Maryland a 1-0 advantage.
The Hoosiers turned around in the fifth to tie the game at one a piece. Hines started off the Hoosier lineup driving the ball to left field. Pinch runner Abby Page (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) replaced Hines on first. Page advanced to second off of junior shortstop Dugan’s sacrifice bunt. With one out in the inning, senior Heather Suca (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet West) walked, putting runners on first and second. Hanson, this weeks Big Ten co-Player-of-the-Week, stepped up to the plate, singling to left field, sending Page in to score.
In that same inning the Terrapins responded, scoring the game-winning run, taking a 2-1 lead over the Hoosiers. Lead off batter center fielder Samantha Sweeney started off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left field. Jen Peel was next up for Maryland, being thrown out at first by IU third baseman Suca, moving Sweeney to third. With one out and a player on third Casey Leiter bunted, bringing Sweeney home.
The Hoosiers out-hit the Terrapins six to five in this mornings contest, and only committed one error in the field. Hines led IU with two hits for the game as Valerie White (Torrance, Calif./North), Dawn Ramynke, Stillians and Hanson all added one hit.
The Hoosiers are back in action this afternoon to face Hofstra University. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
