Indiana Drops Fourth Straight

Hoosiers Drop 7-0 Decision to No. 11 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 11th-ranked Lady Volunteers of Tennessee proved too much for the Indiana women's tennis team Saturday, as the No. 56 Hoosiers (5-6) fell 7-0 in Knoxville.
Tennessee (7-2) established a convincing lead early as the Lady Vols' Sabita Maharaj defeated Indiana's Karie Schlukebir in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Schlukebir's doubles partner, junior Linda Tran, also fell in singles competition, dropping a 6-0, 6-4 decision to the No. 4 ranked player in the nation, Vilmarie Castellvi.
Not one match Saturday was forced into the third set. Indiana's top singles player, junior Martina Grimm, did battle into a first set tiebreaker with Tennessee's Melissa Schaub, but lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Schaub and Castellvi, ranked the 22nd-best doubles pair in the nation, ousted Indiana's top pair of Schlukebir and Tran, ranked 28th, by a score of 8-1.
At No. 2 singles, Indiana's Sarah Batty dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Tammy Encina, while Dominika Walterova (6-0, 6-0) and Sophie Rychlik (6-2, 6-1) also fell in singles matches.
Doubles pairs of Batty/Grimm and Jessica Groth/Rychlik, each fell 8-1 in their respective doubles matches Saturday.
Tennessee now holds an 11-10 advantage over the Hoosiers in the all-time series. IU dropped a 7-0 battle to the Lady Vols last season in Bloomington.
Indiana will return to IU Tennis Pavilion for competition on Saturday, March 1, as the Hoosiers host DePaul and Butler. IU will take to the courts at 9:30 a.m. against DePaul, and follow with a 2:30 p.m. match against the Bulldogs.
