Getting Things Started
The Indiana University women's water polo team (7-4) will compete in its fourth week of competition, Mar. 1-2, as the No. 14 Hoosiers host No. 12 Hartwick in the 2003 Indiana Invitational.
"Playing in this tournament is always nice for us, because it gives a chance for friends and family to see the girls play at home. We're in an atmosphere that benefits us.
"With Hartwick, we'll see a team that is very well coached. They are a talented and strong team, that scores a lot of their points off of the counterattack. That's what we faced against them at Michigan, and that's what we'll need to stop this weekend."
Can You Take Me Higher...
In the CWPA poll released on Feb. 26, Indiana received sole possession of the No. 1 rank. The ranking marks the highest mark for the Hoosiers in the sixth year history of the program. IU also set a school best when the Hoosiers moved into a tie for 12th position in the national polls released Feb. 19. Currently, Indiana is ranked No. 14.
Princeton Invitational Recap
Indiana defeated all four opponents at the Princeton Invitational on Feb. 15-16, including a 9-7 victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara.
The Hoosiers extended its win streak to five games with wins over Bucknell, 13-3; No. 18 Brown, 5-3; and No. 19 Harvard, 8-2.
Keep On Rollin' Baby!!!
Indiana's current five-game win streak mark ties the Hoosiers' longest stretch of 2002. IU recorded five straight wins twice last year.
That's Two In The Top Ten
Indiana's 9-7 victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational marked only the second time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a top-ten team.
IU topped its first top-ten opponent, No. 7 San Jose State, earlier this year at the Michigan Invitational by a score of 10-8.
A Hoosier Pair Reaches 200
A pair of Hoosiers reached the 200 mark in their respective categories at the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 15-16.
Senior Kristin Stanford netted an unassisted 6-meter fastbreak goal against Harvard for her 200th of her career.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner stopped her 200th shot in her short tenure at Indiana, against Bucknell. She would go on to stop 35-of-48 shots-on-goal over the weekend.
Goldner Earns CWPA Player of the Week Honor
The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced Feb. 21 that Indiana sophomore goalkeeper, Jessica Goldner, was named the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week.
Goldner's award was the third consecutive Hoosier water polo honor in as many weeks. Kristin Stanford was given the award the previous two weeks.
In what was her most successful weekend in her young Hoosier career, Goldner recorded an impressive .729 save percentage on 35-of-48 shots-on-goal, and helped the Hoosiers to a 4-0 mark this past weekend at the Princeton Invitational.
Against Bucknell, the Los Altos Hills, Calif., native stopped 6-of-9 shots, while following with a 10-of-13 performance against No. 18 Brown. Goldner was pulled late in the fourth quarter against No. 19 Harvard, but not before recording a perfect 13-of-13 save total. The Hoosier sophomore ended the tournament with a 6-of-13 save performance in the Hoosiers' thrilling victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara.
Also on the weekend, Goldner surpassed the 200-career save mark, and ended the Princeton Invitational with her current career total of 234.
A True All-American
Without a doubt, the Hoosiers' most powerful threat in 2003 is senior Kristin Stanford.
Through three tournaments, Stanford has netted 35 goals on 65 shots (..538), including 17 steals and five assists.
Stanford earned third-team AWPCA All-America honors in 2002, and was named to the CWPA All-Eastern Championship Tournament first-team as well.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is coming off a record-setting year. In 2002, she scored 66 goals on 173 shots and became Indiana's all-time scoring leader. She also broke her own school record of 57 goals in a season with 66 in 2002.
At her current pace of just over three goals a game, Stanford is on pace to shatter her school scoring record in a season with a possible 100+ goals.
Setting The Pace...And History
Kristin Stanford is setting the pace once again to break her own school record single-season scoring mark.
Having established the record in 2002 with 66 goals, Stanford was 17-of-51 (.333) through the first 11 games of the season.
Through the first 11 games of 2003, Stanford is 35-of-65 (.538) in scoring. In 2002, she did not reach the 35 goal mark until the Hoosiers' 20th game last year. Stanford was just 35-of-90 (.389) at that point as well.
Wang Out Of The Gates Quickly
Senior Ginger Wang is making the best of her final year as she exploded on both ends of the pool in the past three weeks.
A native of the Rowland Heights, Calif., Wang set a career high six steals against UC-Santa Cruz, bettering her previous high of five that she set against Hartwick in the season-opener. She also tied a career high of four assists against UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational.
On the year, Wang has scored on 6-of-18 from the pool, and leads the team with both 26 steals and 13 assists.
Wang is also moving rapidly up the career records chart as well. Currently seventh all-time in scoring with 74 goals, Wang needs just six assists to move into the top-five all-time and just 15 steals to reach 100 in her career.
Making The Most Of It
Junior Melissa Pietras joined the water polo squad in mid-season last year, after competing on the IU swim team for the first part of the season.
This year, the Hudsonville, Mich., native has directed her attention solely to water polo and is proving herself in the pool.
Currently, Pietras holds the second best scoring average on the team (.550, 11-of-20), and is second best in assists with nine.
Goalkeeping and Chart-Topping
Jessica Goldner recorded a career-high 30 attempts at the Stanford Invitational in the Hoosiers' 11-9 loss to San Jose State.
The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native also stopped a career-best 15 shots in the Hoosiers 10-3 loss to Cal, which is tied for third best in school history.
Goldner All By Herself
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner will find herself awfully lonely this year, as she is the lone keeper on the Hoosier roster.
Goldner split most of last season with veteran Kirsten Mayberry. Goldner recorded a 3.31 goals-against average in 2002, allowing 96 goals on 340 shots.
Currently on the season, Goldner has stopped 90-of-219 shots (.411).
Coming Up Next...
Indiana will begin the road to its first CWPA Conference Championship, March 8-9, as the Hoosiers travel to Michigan for the first of two CWPA Weekends.
IU will battle Penn State-Behrend at 10:15 a.m., Mercyhurst at 2:00 p.m., and rival Michigan at 7:00 p.m. The Hoosiers will close the CWPA Weekend with Washington & Jefferson at 10:45 a.m.
Indiana Head Coach Barry King (6th Year)
Barry King is in his sixth season at Indiana. In 2002, King and his Hoosiers were just shy of making the NCAAs for the fourth time in five years. The team compiled a 21-14 record, giving IU four 20-win seasons in its five-year existence. King also won his 100th victory in 2002 and currently holds a 113-68-2 (.617) career coaching record.
The Madera, Calif., native also coached the IU club team for three years before it earned varsity status.
Assistant Coach Kristie Dickey (1st Year)
Kristie Dickey is in her first season with the Hoosiers. Known nationwide as a former player, Dickey was a four-time United States Water Polo All-American at the University of California-Davis from 1991-95. Dickey led the Aggies to a USWP National Collegiate title in 1993, while being named most valuable player for her efforts. Dickey also was a part of the Aggies squad that placed second in 1992 and recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in 1994 and 1995.
