Indiana Extends Streak to Six

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Playing in its lone homestand of the year, the Indiana University water polo team defeated No. 12 Hartwick 9-6 on Saturday, in the first game of the Indiana Invitational.
In front of a nearly full Counsilman Billingsley Aquatics Center, No. 14 Indiana gave Hoosier fans just what they were looking for: a strong attack on offense mixed with a tenacious defense.
The Hoosiers (8-4), who extend their win streak to six games, began the scoring quickly as senior All-American Kristin Stanford netted her first of three goals on the night just 26 seconds into the game. Hartwick answered back with two goals of its own in the first period, but it was all IU from that point on.
"We could have turned the game into a struggle once it was tied in the first quarter," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "But I think we played as good as we have played all year in the second quarter."
Indiana would go on to score four unanswered points and eventually take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Senior Ginger Wang notched two goals in the span, while sophomore Krista Peterson and senior Sarah Butler scored one each.
Wang, a native of Rowland Heights, Calif., again led the Hoosiers on the defensive attack, recording five steals, just one shy of her career high.
Peterson also stepped into a leadership role Saturday, posting a 2-of-5 shooting, but recorded three assists and drew four kickouts as well.
"The girls made a good adjustment to Hartwick's play, which was really nice to see," said King. "They completed just about every assignment we gave them heading into the game. We just had a tremendous atmosphere tonight, which was really good to see."
Adding to the vocal crowd late in the game, was sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner, who stopped 9-of-22 shots on the night. With just 12 seconds left in the game, and a victory already in hand, Goldner finished strong, stopping a 4-meter penalty shot, and another Hawks shot off the rebound.
"It was a shock to block those two back-to-back," said Goldner. "I just tried to get spread out as possible and hope that I got a piece of the ball. It is so much fun to have this place alive like it was tonight. We wanted to come and win, and we did just that."
On the night, Indiana was led by Stanford with three goals, while Peterson and Wang each scored twice. Butler and junior Melissa Pietras each had one goal.
Indiana will battle Hartwick tomorrow at 11 a.m. to conclude the 2003 Indiana Invitational.
