IU to Face PSU in Big Ten Tourney

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana (18-11, 8-8) looks to avenge a 74-66 loss to Penn State (7-20, 2-14) in the March 8 regular season finale when the sixth-seeded Hoosiers meet the 11th-seeded Nittany Lions in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament March 13 at the United Center in Chicago. The game tips off at approximately 5:10 p.m. EST and will be televised on ESPN2 (Dave Barnett and Tim McCormick). As usual, Don Fischer, Todd Leary and Joe Smith will call all the action on the statewide Indiana Basketball Radio Network.Under head coach Mike Davis, the Hoosiers are tournament-tested. In Davis' first season (2001), IU advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game before falling to Iowa, 63-61. Of course, the 2002 season was highlighted by Indiana's eighth NCAA Final Four appearance in school history, including victories over top seeds Duke and Oklahoma. IU also opened this season with three victories in three days to capture the EA Sports Maui Invitational championship. In his career, Davis is 3-2 at the Big Ten Tournament and 12-4 during the month of March.

• After recording just one double-double in his first three seasons combined, senior Jeff Newton has a Big Ten-leading 12 double-doubles this season, twice as many as any other league player. Newton's 12 double-doubles are the most by a Hoosier since Kirk Haston had 14 double-doubles in 2000-01.
• Indiana closes the regular season with 222 three-pointers, which is already the second-best single-season total in school history. Not only did the Hoosiers hit double-digit three-pointers in a school record four straight games (Feb. 19 at Iowa through March 4 Minnesota), but this marks the first time in school history that IU has had back-to-back 200-plus trey seasons.
• When freshman Bracey Wright scored 21 points against Penn State on March 8, it marked the 6-3 guard's 10th 20-plus point performance of the season. He is tied for second with Calbert Cheaney for most 20-plus point games by a freshman in school history. Mike Woodson (1976-77) is the all-time leader with 13
• Indiana senior forward Jeff Newton is on pace to become the first Hoosier since Alan Henderson in 1993-94 to lead the Big Ten in rebounding in a season. Newton enters the league tournament with an 8.6 rebound per game average.
