Getting Things Started
The Indiana University women's water polo team (12-5, 3-1) will compete in its sixth week of competition, Mar. 14-20, as the No. 13 Hoosiers travel to California and Arizona for their annual Spring Break.
Indiana will begin its trip at Canyonview Pool on the campus of UC-San Diego, the sit of the 2003 NCAA National Championships. The Hoosiers will play the No. 10 Tritons at 6:00 p.m. PT.
IU will then travel up the coast to Redlands for an 11:00 a.m. game on Sunday, Mar. 16. On the same day, IU will compete against LaVerne (2:00 p.m.) and Cal State-San Bernardino (5:30 p.m.) in the CSUSB Coyote Classic. The Hoosiers travel to No. 6 San Diego State on Monday for a 3:00 p.m. game, and takes off for No. 19 Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., on Tuesday. Indiana will conclude its Spring Break on Thursday, Mar. 20, at No. 7 Loyola Marymount.
Barry King Live...
"In general, the spring break trip is important for us to get a lot of playing experience in. We have some big matches coming up, it's always very important to play well and continue to establish ourselves on the national scene. We're looking forward to continuing the kind of play we have had in the last three weeks and learn about each other along the way."
Can You Take Me Higher...
Indiana may have dropped slightly in the polls this week, but the Hoosiers have been setting their highest rankings ever in school history this season. The Hoosiers leaped from 14th to 12th in the national polls released on March 5. IU remained No. 1 last week in the CWPA conference poll. The 99 points that the Hoosiers received were also a school record.
Currently, the Hoosiers are ranked 13th nationally and second in the CWPA.
CWPA Weekend #1 Recap
Indiana opened CWPA conference play with a 3-1 start this past weekend at Michigan, with its lone loss coming to the Wolverines, 9-7 in overtime. In its three wins, IU outscored Penn St.-Behrend, Mercyhurst, and Washington & Jefferson a total of 49-4.
Shutting Down & Shutting Out
The 14-0 shutout against the Washington & Jefferson marked only the second ever against a varsity team for IU in school history. Indiana recorded its first shutout last season against Cal-Baptist, 7-0.
Stanford Secures Shutout
In last Sunday's game against Washington & Jefferson, Indiana senior All-American Kristin Stanford replaced Jessica Goldner at goalkeeper to start the second half. Goldner, who left with a perfect 2-of-2 first half, watched her teammate save all five shots she faced en route to the 14-0 win.
Meadows Steals The Show
Freshman Clare Meadows literally stole the show, concluding the first CWPA Weekend for the Hoosiers against Washington & Jefferson. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native tied a school record with nine steals, marking the first time a Hoosier as accomplished the feat since Kara Fellerhoff in April of 1999. The nine-steal mark has now been reach four times in the six years of the program.
Hoosiers Hit The Bullseye
IU hit the big "20" last weekend against Mercyhurst, tying the school record for most goals in a game. Clare Meadows scored with 0:00 left in the game to net the Hoosiers' 20th goal. This marks the third time IU has hit 20 goals - the other two were remarkably on the same date, April 4, 1998. IU defeated Ohio, 20-1 and Notre Dame,
20-3.
Nice While It Lasted
Indiana's nine-game win streak was ended by Michigan in a heartbreaking overtime loss at the CWPA Weekend. The streak had been the best stretch for the Hoosiers since 2000, when they won 11 games straight.
Blood, Sweat, And Tears
At the first CWPA Weekend in Michigan, Indiana's Krista Peterson had quite the adventure. The sophomore from Portland, Ore., played her first two games scoring five goals on seven shots. She also recorded an assist and a steal, while only committing one turnover.
Against Michigan, Peterson took an elbow to the mouth at the end of the third quarter and was forced to leave. She did not return. Peterson was examined by the medical staff after the game and was given treatment to a cut under her right eye, and two stitches to her upper lip. She did not play against Washington & Jefferson.
Peeping Thom
Freshman Courtney Thom is beginning to peep through as an offensive threat at two-meters for the Hoosiers. Last weekend, Thom scored on a career high 4-of-6 shots against Penn State-Behrend. She also drew five kickouts against Washington & Jefferson as well. Over three games (DNP vs. Michigan), Thom was 6-of-14 with three assists and three steals.
"Butt" Kickin' In CWPA Play
Senior Sarah Butler opened conference play at Michigan by making her presence known. The Worthington, Ohio product led the Hoosiers in scoring with three goals on four shots against Washington & Jefferson and ended the weekend, 5-of-6, with five steals and one assist as well.
That's Two In The Top Ten
Indiana's 9-7 victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational marked only the second time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a top-ten team.
IU topped its first top-ten opponent, No. 7 San Jose State, earlier this year at the Michigan Invitational by a score of 10-8.
Setting The Pace...And History
Kristin Stanford is setting the pace once again to break her own school record single-season scoring mark.
Having established the record in 2002 with 66 goals, Stanford was 28-of-76 (.368) through the first 17 games of the season.
Through the first 17 games of 2003, Stanford is 44-of-89 (.494) in scoring. In 2002, she did not reach the 38 goal mark until the Hoosiers' 28th game last year. Stanford finished that game scoring four goals to make her 47-of-130 (.362).
Wang Out Of The Gates Quickly
Senior Ginger Wang is making the best of her final year as she exploded on both ends of the pool in the month.
A native of the Rowland Heights, Calif., Wang set a career high six steals against UC-Santa Cruz, bettering her previous high of five that she set against Hartwick, both in the season-opener and in the first game of the Indiana Invitational. She also tied a career high of four assists against UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational.
On the year, Wang has scored on 14-of-32 from the pool, and leads the team with both 36 steals and 16 assists.
Wang is also moving rapidly up the career records chart as well. Currently seventh all-time in scoring with 82 goals, Wang needs just three assists to move into the top-five all-time and just five steals to reach 100 in her career.
Goalkeeping and Chart-Topping
Jessica Goldner recorded a career-high and school record 30 attempts at the Stanford Invitational in the Hoosiers' 11-9 loss to San Jose State.
The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native has also stopped a career-best 15 shots twice this season. A mark which is tied for third best in school history, Goldner reached the 15 save mark against Hartwick at the Indiana Invitational and in the Hoosiers' 10-3 loss to Cal.

Indiana Head Coach Barry King (6th Year)
Barry King is in his sixth season at Indiana. In 2002, King and his Hoosiers were just shy of making the NCAAs for the fourth time in five years. The team compiled a 21-14 record, giving IU four 20-win seasons in its five-year existence. King also won his 100th victory in 2002 and currently holds a 118-69-2 (.624) career coaching record.
The Madera, Calif., native also coached the IU club team for three years before it earned varsity status.
Assistant Coach Kristie Dickey (1st Year)
Kristie Dickey is in her first season with the Hoosiers. Known nationwide as a former player, Dickey was a four-time United States Water Polo All-American at the University of California-Davis from 1991-95. Dickey led the Aggies to a USWP National Collegiate title in 1993, while being named most valuable player for her efforts. Dickey also was a part of the Aggies squad that placed second in 1992 and recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in 1994 and 1995.
