IU Falls to UC-San Diego, 9-4

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In the first game of its annual Spring Break trip, the Indiana University women's water polo team dropped a 9-4 decision to UC-San Diego Friday night. The No. 13 Hoosiers fell to the Tritons for the third time in as many games in the all-time series.
Friday night's conditions surrounding the game were very similar to what the Hoosiers faced at the start of last year's Spring Break, when IU fell 10-4 to San Diego State. Indiana played outside in the chilly, dark skies at Canyonview Pool, and the Hoosiers (12-6, 3-1) clearly did not look comfortable in the water from the start.
"It's always tough to come out here and play right away like we need to," said Indiana coach Barry King. "We have to find a way to come out and start this trip focused on the task at hand. There are distractions, but they are only distractions if we allow them to be. I was pleased though with how we fought back in the second half. We made them play a lot harder than they started out playing."
The No. 10 Tritons (14-5) quickly took charge in the game, led in part by senior Dana Tucker. UC-San Diego's two-meter attacker put the Tritons on the board first, scoring with just 16 seconds expired in the game.
Leading 1-0 after the first quarter, UCSD took control with four goals in the second quarter to take a 5-0 lead at halftime. The Tritons capitalized on their 6-on-5 power plays in the second quarter, while playing tight defense against the Hoosiers on the other end of the pool. IU was shutout on just six shots attempted in the first 14 minutes of play.
Indiana freshman Clare Meadows put the Hoosiers on the board at the 3:05 mark in the third quarter, answering a UCSD goal, scored just one minute prior. The Tritons would extend their lead to 8-1 with two more goals, before the Hoosier offense showed up.
Senior Kristin Stanford netted her first of two goals at the 4:01 mark, and was followed by classmate Jamie Marley just 50 seconds later. After the ninth and final UCSD goal, Stanford found the back of the cage with 2:02 remaining for the game's final goal.
On the night, Stanford led the Hoosiers with two goals on six shots. As a team, Indiana was just 4-of-19 from the pool, while sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner saved 9-of-22 shots.
Indiana will be idle on Saturday and will then play three games on Sunday, beginning with a match at Redlands in Riverside at 11:00 a.m. PT.
