Hoosiers Win Lady Seahawk

WALLACE, N.C. - The beautiful sun and good times of Spring Break was extended two days for the Indiana women's golf team, as the Hoosiers captured the team championship at the Lady Seahawk Invitational in record fashion Tuesday.
IU finished with an 885 (298-298-289), one stroke ahead of Campbell, the tournament's leader after day one. The 54-hole total is a new school record, beating the previous best of 886, which was fired at the 1987 Lady Buckeye Invitational.
The 30th-ranked Hoosiers blistered the River Landing Golf Club with a round of 289, Indiana's third lowest round in school history. The Hoosiers fired a first round 284 en route to a 13th-place finish at the 1998 NCAA Championships, and a 288 to win the Bryan National Invitational in 2000.
Juniors Karen Dennison and Danah Ford led the Hoosiers each with 2-under-par 70s. Dennison, the ninth-ranked golfer in the nation according to Golfweek/Sagarin, finished third individually at 214 (73-71-70), four strokes behind medalist Jessica Krasny of East Carolina. The Madison, Ind., native's three-round total is tied for third best in school history. This past fall, Dennison set the school mark with a 212 at the Shootout at the Legends.
In this year's seven tournaments, Dennison has now recorded a remarkable three wins, two second-place finishes, a third, and an eighth. Entering this season, Dennison's previous career best finish was a fourth-place tie.
While Ford tied her career best 18-hole round Tuesday, which she had recorded in just the last tournament at the Verizon "Mo"Morial, she destroyed her previous 54-hole best of 224. Ford set her career best at the Lady Northern this past fall, but improved on her personal record by five shots, finishing tied for fifth at 219 (73-76-70).
"The girls played really outstanding today on a good golf course," said Indiana head coach Sam Carmichael. "To have two sub-par scores is quite an accomplishment."
But it wasn't just Dennison and Ford that led the Hoosiers to victory. Junior Ambry Bishop (79-75-74) continued to improve each round of the event, and posted a final round 2-over-par 74. Senior Cara Stuckey (77-76-75) also improved each round, ending her tournament with a 75. Both Hoosiers finished tied for 26th overall at 228.
Mary Lidester placed 35th in the event with a 233 (75-77-81) and senior Adrienne Graessle, who competed as an individual in the event, tied for 49th position at 238 (79-78-81).
The Hoosiers will take the weekend off before hosting the annual Indiana Invitational, April 5-6, at the IU Golf Course.
"We are starting to show signs that we're getting in to season form, which is certainly encouraging," said Carmichael.
