Going For 1,000 Wins

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With a win today, history can be made.
Indiana head baseball coach Bob Morgan could reach the 1,000 career win mark on Wednesday afternoon as the Hoosiers host Wright State at 3 p.m.
Morgan picked up win No. 999 Tuesday, as Indiana scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Saginaw Valley State, 4-3. This Hoosiers are now 14-2 on the season.
Morgan has amassed a career record of 999-506-6 in his 28th season as a head coach, and 711 of those victories have come in 20 seasons at Indiana. When he reaches the 1,000 win mark, he would become the 12th active Division I coach to reach that milestone and the 26th in history. Coming into the 2003 season, Morgan also ranked 20th among active Division I Coaches with a .662 winning percentage.
Before coming to Indiana, Morgan spent six seasons at Wooster followed by two seasons at Kent State.

Indiana Update
Coming into the week, the IU pitching staff had the Big Ten's best ERA at 2.52. After yesterday's win over Saginaw Valley State, the mark stands at 2.55. The Hoosiers are now hitting .285 as a team, which ranked fifth among Big Ten teams in the latest conference statistics.
At the plate, sophomore Corby Heckman has been hot of late and sports a .415 batting average. Heckman's 22 hits are a team-best and his six doubles are a team-high. Senior Vasili Spanos is next with a .358 average and has a 17 RBI to pace the club. Six Hoosiers players are hitting better than .300.
On the mound, senior Jacob Cary has pitched a team-high 29.0 innings and owns a 2.79 ERA. Cary tossed a pair of complete games in Florida to improve his record to 4-0.
Junior Chris Behrens has worked 19.1 innings for the Hoosiers and has an 0.92 ERA, the best among Big Ten pitchers, and 14 strikeouts.
Closer Ryan Smith is 3-0 on the season and has three saves. Smith's ERA is 1.46 and he has 14 strikeouts.
Scouting the Opponent: Wright State
Wright State enters today's game with a 5-12 record and coming off a 4-2 win over Anderson University on Monday. Chris Tuttle leads the Raiders at the plate with .379 batting average. He has scored a team-best 17 runs and collected 10 RBI. Trent Matthews is second on the club with a .348 average and 13 RBI.
Aaron Braden boasts the best ERA on the Raider pitching staff at 3.28 to go with a 2-2 record. Casey Abrams has pitched a team-high 31.1 innings and has a 5.46 ERA. He has logged 43 strikeouts and 22 walks.
The Raiders are coached by Ron Nischwitz, who is in his 29th seasons at Wright State.
On Deck
Indiana will usher in the Big Ten Conference portion of its 2003 schedule when its visits the Fighting Illini of Illinois. The four-game series kicks off on Friday at 4:05 p.m., continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:05 and finishes with a game on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
