Getting Things Started
The Indiana University women's water polo team (16-8, 3-1) will compete in its seventh week of competition, Mar. 29-30, as the No. 14 Hoosiers continue Collegiate Water Polo Association play in the second of two CWPA Weekends.
The event will be held at the Henry Memorial Center on the campus of the Washington & Jefferson in Washington, Pa.
Indiana will play Penn State-Behrend at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and will follow with Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m. Indiana will conclude the CWPA Weekend on Sunday against Gannon at 10:45 a.m. and Grove City at 2:30 p.m.
The Hoosiers have a combined perfect 12-0 all-time record against this weekend's opponents.
The CWPA Weekend allows each school in the conference to play four games, for a season total of eight conference games. After the second CWPA Weekend, conference records will be used to seed the teams in the Southern Division and Eastern Championships.
Barry King Live...
"This weekend's conference play is important for us because our record will count towards our seed for Divisionals and Easterns. We're coming off a long and tough Spring Break, but I'm looking for us to play hard and win all four of these games."
"Nothing But Your Best..."
This past Wednesday, Indiana head coach Barry King invited another Hoosier coach to speak to the 16-8 Hoosiers as they enter the final stage of their season.
IU Men's Soccer coach Jerry Yeagley, a five-time National Coach of the Year, spoke with the water polo team for nearly 20 minutes, refocusing the Hoosiers on their run to their first NCAA Appearance.
Yeagley was certainly a valid speaker, as he has won five NCAA Championships while at Indiana.
"From here on out, nothing but your best is acceptable," he said. He also noted that water polo has done nothing but add to the success of IU athletics. "The success of the water polo team has greatly contributed to the success of our athletics department. Keep your heads high, and continue to wear Indiana on your suits with pride. Ladies, we are all very proud of you and what you have done so far."
Spring Break Recap
The No. 14 Hoosiers finished their Spring Break last week with a 4-3 record. IU defeated key opponents in Redlands (5-4, OT) and No. 19 Arizona State (8-5). Indiana's three losses came to top-ten opponents No. 6 San Diego State (11-4), No. 7 Loyola Marymount (12-3), and No. 10 UC-San Diego (9-4).
Shutting Out The Opponents
While it took five years of varsity competition for the Hoosiers to shutout their opponents (Cal-Baptist, 7-0 last year), Indiana has now recorded two shutouts in back-to-back weeks this season. IU blanked Washington & Jefferson 14-0 three weeks ago at the CWPA Weekend, and stopped LaVerne over Spring Break last week, 13-0.
Goldner Nearing Save Record
Not only did sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner set her career high of 17 saves against Cal State-San Bernardino over Spring Break, but she also eclipsed the 300 save mark for her career.
Her 17 saves against the Coyotes were just two shy of the school record, and the second best performance since Kate Toole's 17 blocks against Slippery Rock in 1998.
The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native currently has 190 saves on the season and 335 for her career.
Marley Raises Eyes Over Break
Senior Jamie Marley turned in quite an all-around performance over Spring Break. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Marley netted seven goals on 12 shots, while recording four assists and four steal as well. One of the seven goals proved to be a gamewinner for Indiana, as Marley put the Hoosiers up 5-4 in overtime at Redlands.
King Looks For Win 125
Having notched four wins over Spring Break, Indiana head coach Barry King is now just three shy of his 125th win of his career. King, the lone coach in Hoosier water polo history, will most likely reach the mark at this weekend's CWPA Conference Weekend.
Hoosiers Eye Scoring Record
Last year's Indiana ballclub set the school record for single-season scoring with 357 goals. The Hoosiers are giving quite the challenge to the record this year, having already recorded 208 goals over 24 games. In 2002, IU had netted 212 goals in the first 24 games.
Setting The Pace...And History
Kristin Stanford is setting the pace once again to break her own school record single-season scoring mark.
Having established the record in 2002 with 66 goals, Stanford was 40-of-121 (.331) through the first 24 games of the season.
Through the first 24 games of 2003, Stanford is 55-of-123 (.447) in scoring. In 2002, she did not reach the 55-goal mark until the Hoosiers' 31st game last year. Stanford finished that game scoring two goals to make her 55-of-146 (.377).
Butt Kickin' As Of Late
Senior Sarah Butler opened conference play at Michigan by making her presence known. The Worthington, Ohio product led the Hoosiers in scoring with three goals on four shots against Washington & Jefferson and ended the weekend, 5-of-6, with five steals and one assist as well. Over Spring Break, Butler recorded a career high five goals on six shots against La Verne.
Meadows Steals The Show
Freshman Clare Meadows literally stole the show, concluding the first CWPA Weekend for the Hoosiers against Washington & Jefferson. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native tied a school record with nine steals, marking the first time a Hoosier as accomplished the feat since Kara Fellerhoff in April of 1999. The nine-steal mark has now been reach four times in the six years of the program.
Hoosiers Hit The Bullseye
IU hit the big "20" in the first CWPA Weekend against Mercyhurst, tying the school record for most goals in a game. Clare Meadows scored with 0:00 left in the game to net the Hoosiers' 20th goal. This marks the third time IU has hit 20 goals - the other two were remarkably on the same date, April 4, 1998. IU defeated Ohio, 20-1 and Notre Dame, 20-3.
Nice While It Lasted
Indiana's nine-game win streak was ended by Michigan in a heartbreaking overtime loss at the CWPA Weekend. The streak had been the best stretch for the Hoosiers since 2000, when they won 11 games straight.
Blood, Sweat, And Tears
At the first CWPA Weekend in Michigan, Indiana's Krista Peterson had quite the adventure. The sophomore from Portland, Ore., played her first two games scoring five goals on seven shots. She also recorded an assist and a steal, while only committing one turnover.
Against Michigan, Peterson took an elbow to the mouth at the end of the third quarter and was forced to leave. She did not return. Peterson was examined by the medical staff after the game and was given treatment to a cut under her right eye, and two stitches to her upper lip. She did not play against Washington & Jefferson.
That's Two In The Top Ten
Indiana's 9-7 victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational marked only the second time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a top-ten team.
IU topped its first top-ten opponent, No. 7 San Jose State, earlier this year at the Michigan Invitational by a score of 10-8.
Indiana Head Coach Barry King (6th Year)
Barry King is in his sixth season at Indiana. In 2002, King and his Hoosiers were just shy of making the NCAAs for the fourth time in five years. The team compiled a 21-14 record, giving IU four 20-win seasons in its five-year existence. King also won his 100th victory in 2002 and currently holds a 122-72-2 (.622) career coaching record.
The Madera, Calif., native also coached the IU club team for three years before it earned varsity status.
Assistant Coach Kristie Dickey (1st Year)
Kristie Dickey is in her first season with the Hoosiers. Known nationwide as a former player, Dickey was a four-time United States Water Polo All-American at the University of California-Davis from 1991-95. Dickey led the Aggies to a USWP National Collegiate title in 1993, while being named most valuable player for her efforts. Dickey also was a part of the Aggies squad that placed second in 1992 and recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in 1994 and 1995.
