Indiana Overpowers Slippery Rock, 15-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Indiana women's water polo team improved to 5-1 in the CWPA Conference and 18-8 overall, as the 14th-ranked Hoosiers topped Slippery Rock on Saturday, 15-2.

The Rock opened the game on top, scoring at the 3:01 mark of the first quarter. Slippery Rock's lead did not last long, as the Hoosiers' Krista Peterson answered one minute later, with the first of her four goals of the game.

Indiana scored five goals in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead at intermission. The second half was all Indiana as well, outscoring The Rock 7-0 in the final 14 minutes of play.

"We played well today and got good contributions from a lot of people," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "I was happy with how we did on some new things that we have been working on, and look forward to us improving on those things as well."

IU was 15-of-33 against Slippery Rock, led by Peterson's four goals on five shots. Seniors Kristin Stanford and Sarah Butler added three goals each, while junior Melissa Pietras netted two.

Indiana's other two seniors, Jamie Marley and Ginger Wang, each added two assists in the game as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner also stayed active in the pool, playing the full 28 minutes and stopping 13-of-20 shots, while only allowing two goals. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native also recorded two steals and assisted on one of Peterson's goals.

The Hoosiers conclude the CWPA Conference Weekend on Sunday, with Gannon at 10:45 a.m. and Grove City at 2:30 p.m.

CWPA CONFERENCE WEEKEND #2 NOTEBOOK

 Senior Kristin Stanford scored five goals (2-Penn State-Behrend, 3-Slippery Rock) in the first day of the CWPA, leaving her just seven goals shy of breaking the single-season school record for scoring. In 2002, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native broke the previous school record, which she set in 2001, with 66 goals this past year.

 In the Hoosiers' five CWPA Conference wins this year, Indiana has outscored its opponents, 79-9. (CWPA #1 @ Michigan - 49-4, CWPA #2 @ Washington & Jefferson - 30-5.) The lone CWPA loss for IU this year was to Michigan, 9-7 in overtime. Overall, Indiana has outscored its opponents 88-16 in six games this year.

 In the past nine games, senior Jamie Marley has been one of the most productive Hoosiers in the pool. She has now scored on 9-of-15 shots, while recording nine assists and six steals as well.

 Freshmen Courtney Livak and Clare Meadows will most likely sit out the entire CWPA Weekend with injuries. Both Hoosiers have been sidelined with soreness in their shoulders. Also, freshman Courtney Thom jammed her finger against Penn State-Behrend and did not play against Slippery Rock Saturday evening.

 Hoosier head coach Barry King won the 124th game of his career, leaving him one shy of the 125-win mark.
