Hoosiers Finish CWPA 7-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Indiana women's water polo team concluded the second of two Collegiate Water Polo Association Conference Weekends Sunday, defeating Grove City College, 12-1, to improve 7-1 in the CWPA and 20-8 overall.

The 14th-ranked Hoosiers controlled Grove City the entire game, leading 9-0 at halftime, and allowing Grove City's lone goal with just 5:31 left in the game.

Krista Peterson and senior Ginger Wang led the Hoosiers in the final game, netting three goals each, while senior Sarah Butler added three assists. With the exception of freshman Emily Schmitt, who recorded two assists in the game, each Hoosier that suited up for Indiana scored at least one goal.

Indiana was 12-of-21 against Grove City, while stopping 6-of-9 shots on the defensive side of the ball.

Indiana head coach Barry King experimented with four goalies in the game, each having served one of the four 7-minute quarters. Veteran Hoosier goalie Jessica Goldner left after the first quarter, stopping 2-of-3 shots, without allowing a goal. Senior Kristin Stanford was a perfect 3-of-3 in the second quarter, while Peterson did not see one shot attempt in the cage during the third. Schmitt finished in goal for the Hoosiers, stopping 1-of-3, while allowing the lone goal by Grove City.

Earlier in the day, King recorded his 125th career win with a decisive 15-4 victory over Gannon. Stanford and Butler led the Hoosiers with three goals each, while freshman Rachel Lowe recorded a career high, scoring on each of the two attempts she took. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native also tallied an assist and a steal in the game.

Goldner remained in goal for the entire 28 minutes, stopping 12-of-18 shots, while recording three steals out of the cage as well.

With Indiana's 7-1 CWPA record, the Hoosiers will receive one of the top seeds for the Southern Division Championship, which will take place in Lewisberg, Pa., April 12-13.

CWPA CONFERENCE WEEKEND #2 NOTEBOOK

 With the 12-1 win over Grove City Sunday, Indiana eclipsed the 20-win mark for the fifth time in the six-year history of the program.

 Senior Kristin Stanford scored nine goals (2-Penn State-Behrend, 3-Slippery Rock, 3-Gannon, 1-Grove City) over the CWPA weekend, leaving her just three goals shy of breaking the single-season school record for scoring. In 2002, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native broke the previous school record, which she set in 2001, with 66 goals this past year. Stanford currently has 64 goals over the 2003 campaign.

 In the Hoosiers' seven CWPA Conference wins this year, Indiana has outscored its opponents, 106-14. (CWPA #1 @ Michigan - 49-4, CWPA #2 @ Washington & Jefferson - 57-10.) The lone CWPA loss for IU this year was to Michigan, 9-7 in overtime. Overall, Indiana has outscored its opponents 113-23 in eight games this year.

 In the past 11 games, senior Jamie Marley has been one of the most productive Hoosiers in the pool. She has now scored on 11-of-17 shots, while recording 12 assists and nine steals as well.

 While Indiana was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, the Hoosiers were plagued by numerous injuries. Freshmen Courtney Livak and Clare Meadows sat out the entire weekend with pain in their shoulders, while classmate Courtney Thom jammed, and possibly broke, her finger against Penn State-Behrend and did not play against Slippery Rock on Saturday or in both games on Sunday. Junior Kristy Streefkerk also sat out both games on Sunday due to illness.
