Bodine The Hero In Indiana Win

Indianapolis, Ind. - Kristen Bodine drained a game-winning leaner with 11 seconds remaining to give the Indiana women's basketball team a 52-51 win over Wisconsin in opening-round play in the 2003 Big Ten Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The Hoosiers improved to 13-14 on the year with the win, while Wisconsin's season ends with a 7-20 mark.
The eighth-seeded Hoosiers exploded out of the gates, getting out to a 12-3 lead in the early going. Indiana went into the locker room at halftime with a 28-18 lead. The Hoosiers' defensive performance in the first half matched their best against a Big Ten opponent this year.
"No matter what happened, our defense was our strength and that's what won the game for us," Indiana freshman guard Kali Kullberg said. Kullberg returned to the Indiana lineup for the first time since December 14 after having missed 18 games with a torn ACL sustained in practice. "We stepped up defensively and that's how we won the game."
Jenny DeMuth led the Hoosiers with 14 points and matched a career high with five steals in the game. Angela Hawkins added four points and established a new Big Ten Tournament record by grabbing 17 rebounds.
Bodine was the player who made the big one when it counted, however, taking the ball on the left wing and working her way to the middle of the Wisconsin defense for a leaner from the free throw line with 11 seconds left and the Hoosiers trailing by one.
"The floater was a play coach designed for me to pass or shoot the ball," Bodine said. "I thought I was open so I shot the ball."
The Martinsville HS graduate finished the game with 10 points and three assists.
Thursday's win was the Hoosiers fourth in a row at the Big Ten Tournament. Indiana has compiled a 5-1 record at the Big Ten Tournament since Kathi Bennett took over in 2000-01.
Indiana faces Big Ten Player of the Year Kelly Mazzante and top-seeded Penn State at noon tomorrow in the second round of the tournament in a rematch of last year's championship game, which Indiana won, 75-72. The Hoosiers and Lady Lions met in State College on February 2, with Penn State claiming a 69-55 win. The two teams did not face off in Bloomington.
