Getting Things Started
The Indiana University women's water polo team (9-4) will compete in its fifth week of competition, Mar. 8-9, as the No. 12 Hoosiers open Collegiate Water Polo Association play at the first of two CWPA Weekends.
The event will be held at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Indiana will play Penn State-Behrend at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, and will follow with Mercyhurst at 2 p.m. and rival Michigan at 7 p.m. Indiana will conclude the CWPA Weekend against Washington & Jefferson on Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
The CWPA Weekend allows each school in the conference to play four games, for a season total of eight conference games. After the second CWPA Weekend, conference records will be used to seed the teams in the Southern Division and Eastern Championships.
Barry King Live...
"This weekend's conference play is important for us because our record will count towards our seed for Divisionals and Easterns. Obviously the game that we are focused on is Michigan. They have had some injuries, while we have been getting much better as a team. We are not the same team that lost 12-6 to them in January. It should be a battle like it always is."
Can You Take Me Higher...
Indiana once again continued to climb in the polls this week, marking the highest rankings ever in school history. The Hoosiers leaped from 14th to 12th this week in the national polls released on March 5. IU remained No. 1 in the CWPA conference poll. The 99 points that the Hoosiers received are also a school record.
Indiana Invitational Recap
Indiana defeated No. 12 Hartwick 9-6 last Saturday, and 7-6 last Sunday to win both of its games in the Hoosiers' lone homestand.
Keep On Rollin' Baby!!!
Indiana's seven-game win streak is the best stretch for the Hoosiers since 2000, when they won 11 games straight.
Shutting Out Stanford
In last Sunday's game against Hartwick, Indiana senior All-American Kristin Stanford was held scoreless in the game for the first time in 21 games. Stanford was 0-for-1 in limited action against Penn State-Behrend on April 7, 2002. The Hoosiers won in a route, 19-5.
That's Two In The Top Ten
Indiana's 9-7 victory over No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational marked only the second time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a top-ten team.
IU topped its first top-ten opponent, No. 7 San Jose State, earlier this year at the Michigan Invitational by a score of 10-8.
A Hoosier Pair Reaches 200
A pair of Hoosiers reached the 200 mark in their respective categories at the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 15-16.
Senior Kristin Stanford netted an unassisted 6-meter fastbreak goal against Harvard for her 200th of her career.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner stopped her 200th shot in her short tenure at Indiana, against Bucknell. She would go on to stop 35-of-48 shots-on-goal over the weekend.
A True All-American
Without a doubt, the Hoosiers' most powerful threat in 2003 is senior Kristin Stanford.
Through three tournaments, Stanford has netted 38 goals on 75 shots (..507), including 21 steals and six assists.
Stanford earned third-team AWPCA All-America honors in 2002, and was named to the CWPA All-Eastern Championship Tournament first-team as well.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is coming off a record-setting year. In 2002, she scored 66 goals on 173 shots and became Indiana's all-time scoring leader. She also broke her own school record of 57 goals in a season with 66 in 2002.
At her current pace of just over three goals a game, Stanford is on pace to shatter her school scoring record in a season with a possible 100+ goals.
Setting The Pace...And History
Kristin Stanford is setting the pace once again to break her own school record single-season scoring mark.
Having established the record in 2002 with 66 goals, Stanford was 18-of-58 (.310) through the first 13 games of the season.
Through the first 13 games of 2003, Stanford is 38-of-75 (.507) in scoring. In 2002, she did not reach the 38-goal mark until the Hoosiers' 21st game last year. Stanford was just 38-of-98 (.388) at that point as well.
Wang Out Of The Gates Quickly
Senior Ginger Wang is making the best of her final year as she exploded on both ends of the pool in the month.
A native of the Rowland Heights, Calif., Wang set a career high six steals against UC-Santa Cruz, bettering her previous high of five that she set against Hartwick, both in the season-opener and in the first game of the Indiana Invitational. She also tied a career high of four assists against UC-Santa Barbara at the Princeton Invitational.
On the year, Wang has scored on 9-of-25 from the pool, and leads the team with both 31 steals and 14 assists.
Wang is also moving rapidly up the career records chart as well. Currently seventh all-time in scoring with 77 goals, Wang needs just five assists to move into the top-five all-time and just 10 steals to reach 100 in her career.
Making The Most Of It
Junior Melissa Pietras joined the water polo squad in mid-season last year, after competing on the IU swim team for the first part of the season.
This year, the Hudsonville, Mich., native has directed her attention solely to water polo and is proving herself in the pool.
Currently, Pietras holds the second best scoring average on the team (.480, 12-of-25), and is third best in assists with 10.
Goalkeeping and Chart-Topping
Jessica Goldner recorded a career-high and school record 30 attempts at the Stanford Invitational in the Hoosiers' 11-9 loss to San Jose State.
The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native has also stopped a career-best 15 shots twice this season. A mark which is tied for third best in school history, Goldner reached the 15 save mark against Hartwick at the Indiana Invitational and in the Hoosiers' 10-3 loss to Cal.
Goldner All By Herself
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goldner will find herself awfully lonely this year, as she is the lone keeper on the Hoosier roster.
Goldner split most of last season with veteran Kirsten Mayberry. Goldner recorded a 3.31 goals-against average in 2002, allowing 96 goals on 340 shots.
Currently on the season, Goldner has stopped 113-of-270 shots (.419).
Coming Up Next...
Indiana will begin its 2003 Spring Break on Friday, March 14 at No. 9 UC-San Diego. The Hoosiers will then face Redlands on Saturday, and No. 7 San Diego State on Sunday. Monday the 18th, IU travels to No. 19 Arizona State, and concludes the trip at No. 6 Loyola Marymount on Wednesday.
Indiana Head Coach Barry King (6th Year)
Barry King is in his sixth season at Indiana. In 2002, King and his Hoosiers were just shy of making the NCAAs for the fourth time in five years. The team compiled a 21-14 record, giving IU four 20-win seasons in its five-year existence. King also won his 100th victory in 2002 and currently holds a 115-68-2 (.622) career coaching record.
The Madera, Calif., native also coached the IU club team for three years before it earned varsity status.
Assistant Coach Kristie Dickey (1st Year)
Kristie Dickey is in her first season with the Hoosiers. Known nationwide as a former player, Dickey was a four-time United States Water Polo All-American at the University of California-Davis from 1991-95. Dickey led the Aggies to a USWP National Collegiate title in 1993, while being named most valuable player for her efforts. Dickey also was a part of the Aggies squad that placed second in 1992 and recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in 1994 and 1995.
