IU Ends Regular Season at PSU

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana (18-10, 8-7) closes the 2002-03 regular season on March 8 at Penn State (6- 19, 1-13). Tipoff is slated for 8:07 p.m. EST at Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa. Craig Coshun and John Laskowski will call the action for ESPN Plus Local, as will Don Fischer, Todd Leary and Joe Smith do the same for the Indiana Radio Network.The Hoosiers bring a two-game winning streak to Penn State, having downed Iowa, 91- 88 in overtime on March 1 and Minnesota, 74- 70 on March 4. Regardless of the outcome of the Penn State game, Indiana will likely be the sixth seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. This means that IU would meet 11th-seeded Penn State Thursday, March 13 at 9:10 p.m. EST at the United Center.
Senior guard Tom Coverdale needs one three-pointer to move past Brian Evans into second on IU's all-time list, and he needs one more assist to move past Jamal Meeks and Damon Bailey into sole possession of third place on that list. Should Indiana defeat Penn State, it would mark the Hoosiers' 19th victory of the season, the same win total it had at the end of the 2001-02 regular season.

• Should Indiana defeat Penn State on March 8, it will more than likely clinch the sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament March 13-16 at the United Center in Chicago. That means the Hoosiers would face 11th seeded Penn State twice in less than a week. The rematch would take place March 13 at 5 p.m. EST and be televised by ESPN2.
• Should IU defeat the Nittany Lions in the first round of the tournament, then it would move on to face the third seed in Friday's 9:10 p.m. quarterfinal. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the third seed will either be Michigan or Purdue.
• Indiana is regaining its three-point shooting touch just in time for the postseason. IU was 13-of-23 from beyond the three-point line against Minnesota, marking the Hoosiers' school record, fourth straight game with at least 10 three-pointers. During this four-game stretch, Indiana is 43-of-92 (.467) from beyond the arc.
• Should Indiana win at Penn State on March 8 and then win its first game in the Big Ten Tournament, it would clinch the Hoosiers' seventh-straight 20-plus win season, the longest such streak in school history.
• On Feb. 12, Indiana coach Mike Davis inserted freshman Marshall Strickland as the starting point guard and moved senior Tom Coverdale to the "two-guard." Here is a look at some of the key individual and team statistics since that game Coverdale has 28 assists and just four turnovers. The team has averaged 70 points per game in the last five games, compared to 60 points per game in the five games prior to the Michigan game. Strickland is emerging as a steady point guard with 10 assists and three turnovers in his last two games.
• In its last two games, Indiana is 42-of-51 (.824) from the free throw line. This is the Hoosiers' best two-game free throw shooting performance since they were 38-of-44 (.864) against Illinois-Chicago and Vanderbilt on Dec. 7 and 9.
