Indianapolis, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team turned in one of its most complete performances of the year, but suffered a 67-64 loss to top-seeded Penn State in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday.
The Hoosiers (13-15 overall) stifled Big Ten Player of the Year Kelly Mazzante for 38 minutes, but the All-American stepped up her play in the final two minutes, getting a key offensive rebound with 1:10 left and Penn State leading, 62-61. Mazzante was trapped underneath the basket by three Hoosiers and called timeout. Coming out of the timeout, she drilled a step-back 25-foot three-pointer to put the Lady Lions up, 65-61 with 51 seconds remaining.
Indiana stormed right back downcourt, as Cyndi Valentin converted on a three-point play by going hard to the rim with 41 seconds on the clock to cut the Penn State lead to one at 65-64.
Mazzante then drew a foul on Jill Hartman with 19 seconds left and knocked down a pair of free throws that forced Indiana to have to make a three to tie on the final trip downcourt. The Hoosiers were not able to get a good look at the rim as Penn State extended its defense knowing full well that IU needed a three to tie. Lisa Eckart took the final shot, which never had a chance to go in.
Kristen Bodine scored nine points, had nine assists and six rebounds for the Hoosiers, with Eckart leading the team with 15 points.
Penn State's Tanisha Wright led all scorers with 26 points and added four steals. Turnovers were a problem for the Hoosiers all game, as IU committed 21 in the contest.
The Hoosiers shot 45.3 percent from the field, which was their second-highest single-game field goal shooting percentage against a Big Ten opponent this year, and held Penn State to 36.4 percent shooting (10.4 percent below Penn State's season average).
