Big Ten Tourney Pairings Set

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana (18-11, 8-8) is the sixth seed in the 2003 Big Ten Tournament, which gets underway Thursday, March 13, at the United Center in Chicago. In a rematch of Saturday's regular season finale, the Hoosiers will meet 11th-seeded Penn State (7-20, 2-14) Thursday at 5:05 p.m. EST in a game that will be televised live on ESPN2. The winner of the Indiana-Penn State game faces third-seeded Michigan (17-12, 10-6) Friday at 9:10 p.m. EST in a game that will be televised on ESPN Plus.Indiana enters the Big Ten Tournament looking to avenge a 74-66 loss at Penn State in Saturday's regular season finale. Under head coach Mike Davis, the Hoosiers are tournament-tested. In Davis' first season (2001), IU advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game before falling to Iowa, 63-61. Of course, the 2002 season was highlighted by Indiana's eighth NCAA Final Four appearance in school history, including victories over top seeds Duke and Oklahoma. IU also opened this season with three victories in three days to capture the EA Sports Maui Invitational championship. In his career, Davis is 3-2 at the Big Ten Tournament and 12-4 during the month of March.
In the first five years of the Big Ten Tournament, four different teams have won the title. Defending tournament champion Ohio State (14-13, 7-9) is the eighth seed in this year's tournament and gets things underway Thursday when it faces ninth-seeded Iowa (15-12, 7-9). The winner of the Ohio State-Iowa game faces top-seeded Wisconsin Friday at 12 p.m. EST. Thursday's second game features seventh-seeded Minnesota (16-11, 8-8) plays 10th-seeded Northwestern (11-16,3-13) Thursday at 2:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to meet second-seeded Illinois (21-6, 11-5) Friday at 6:40 p.m. IU-Penn State closes Thursday's action, with the winner facing Michigan. Fourth-seeded Purdue (18-9, 10-6) and fifth-seeded Michigan State (18-11, 10-6) also earned first round byes and will square off in Friday's 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
Saturday's semifinals are slated for 1:40 p.m. and 4:05 p.m., with the winners advancing to play in Sunday's 3:30 p.m. championship game. The semifinals and finals will be televised by CBS, while ESPN will carry the first two opening round games and the first two quarterfinals. The Indiana-Penn State game can be seen on ESPN2, and the second session of the quarterfinals can be seen on ESPN Plus.
