Bloomington, Ind. - Thursday's football practice at Indiana was all about the trenches.
The lines controlled much of the action, and offensive line coach Steve Addazio and defensive line coach Joe Cullen would have it no other way. In third-and-short drills, it was Addazio's offensive line that dominated, leading the way for the Hoosier running backs. The effectiveness of the offensive line created such a strong running attack that set the stage for the play of the day. With the defense struggling to stop the run on third and short, Graeme McFarland was able to find Courtney Roby on a play-action bomb that Roby made a highlight-reel diving catch for.
The tide would change when the situation moved to third and goal from the two yard line. Cullen's defensive line asserted itself, forcing a pair of fumbles and getting multiple goal-line stands. Perhaps the most memorable of those stands came when 5-10, 174-pound defensive back Courtney Clency stopped 5-11, 240-pound Marlin Lynch in his tracks.
The Hoosiers return to the practice field on Saturday and will take the field for the Spring Game at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25 at Memorial Stadium. Admission to the Spring Game is free, with the gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
