Bodine Earns MVP Honors

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team announced its post-season award-winners on Thursday.
Taking top honors was senior point guard and co-captain Kristen Bodine, who was tabbed as the team's Most Valuable Player in a vote by her teammates. The Martinsville HS graduate averaged 8.9 points per game and led the team with 112 assists (4.0 apg). Bodine shot 73 percent from the free throw line and was among the most reliable ball handlers in the Big Ten, ranking second in the conference with a 1.67 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Bodine posted a season high with 12 assists against Ball State in the championship game of the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic, a mark that ranked as the top assist total for any Big Ten player last year. In addition, she established an Indiana Big Ten Tournament record by distributing nine assists against Penn State in the tournament quarterfinals. Bodine sunk a pair of game-winning shots against Wisconsin, knocking down a three-pointer from the corner to apply the final dagger in a 49-48 win in Madison during the regular season. She then sunk a 15-foot floater with nine seconds left to lift the Hoosiers to a 52-51 win over the Badgers at the Big Ten Tournament.
The Most Valuable Teammate award went to the team's other co-captain, senior small forward Jill Hartman. The award is presented to the teammate that has shown herself to be the most valuable, not only on the court but off the court, in her character and dedication to team unity. Always there with a kind word, Hartman was also there with some big games. The Evansville native recorded double-figure scoring efforts in four consecutive games during the Big Ten season, marking the first time in her career that she had ever accomplished that feat. Hartman poured in a season-high 15 points at Iowa. In addition, she also matched a career high with six assists against Ball State early in the year. Hartman finished her career as Indiana's single-season leader in three-point shooting percentage (.625 pct in 2000-01) and ranking second on the school's career three-point shooting percentage list (.367 pct).
The team's Most Improved Player was forward Jamie Gathing. The award is presented to the teammate that has shown the greatest desire and success in improving her skills individually in order to help the team achieve more. The junior from Kankakee, Ill., averaged 2.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game last year. Although those numbers were on pace with her career averages, it was late in the year when the team needed her most when Gathing did her best. Gathing's averages improved to 6.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in the team's final five contests.
Earning the team's Servanthood Award was senior forward Khisha Asubuhi. The award is presented to the team member that has shown a commitment to serve her teammates. Asubuhi saw her minutes take a dip from her junior year, but she was always there for the team on the floor, in the locker room and away from the court altogether. One of the most well-liked players on the squad, Asubuhi also excelled in the classroom, earning the Varsity Club Scholastic Achievement Award for having the highest grade-point average on the team. Asubuhi's name will be engraved on a permanent plaque in Assembly Hall for earning the award.
In addition to the awards presented by the team, several players were also honored for their efforts in the classroom. Both Asubuhi and junior point guard LeeAnn Stephenson were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team, with Stephenson, Hartman, freshman forward Brigett Branson and freshman guard Kali Kullberg earning Indiana's Alpha Beta recognition for maintaining grade-point averages above 3.0 for the fall semester.
