Bloomington, Ind. - With the Spring Game right around the corner, Indiana head coach Gerry DiNardo toned things down for Tuesday's practice.
The Hoosiers practiced in Mellencamp Pavilion for the first time this spring, and took the field with only helmets, shoulder pads and shorts.
Special teams play was the focus of the early part of practice, with the Hoosiers working on the punt and punt return. Kicker Brian Robertson got several reps with the number two punt team, and had several booming punts. Tyson Beattie, the only true punter on the roster, continued to look solid with the number one punt team. The Indiana field goal unit also got some work.
Next up was 7-on-7 drills, with quarterback Matt LoVecchio looking particularly effective in the short passing game. However, it was Graeme McFarland who provided the best long ball of the day, connecting deep downfield with Courtney Roby for a touchdown.
Things got interesting as practice wound down, with the Hoosiers getting work in the redzone and in the two-minute drill. In redzone action, running back Yamar Washington was effective both inside the tackles and getting outside. Washington showed an excellent burst by taking a toss and exploding outside for a touchdown scamper.
The number one offense looked good in the two-minute drill, taking the clock down to four seconds remaining before Brian Robertson kicked a 32-yard field goal with time expiring. The key play of the drill was a 23-yard pass from LoVecchio to Glenn Johnson in which Johnson not only made the grab, but he also got out of bounds to stop the clock.
The Hoosiers participate in their final practice before the Spring Game on Thursday, then take the field at 7 p.m. on Friday at Memorial Stadium for the Spring Game. Admission is free to all fans, with the gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
