Bloomington, Ind. - Day five of spring practice was more like an afternoon of winter practice. The Hoosiers had an intense practice on an overcast cold afternoon. Just days earlier the staff was in shorts and short-sleeve shirts. Today, with the exception of Assistant Coach Joe Cullen, who never seems to be affected by the weather, the staff was doned with sweatshirts and winter hats. But, there was plenty of heat on the practice field.
"I thought that after a slow start we got things going today," Head Coach Gerry DiNardo said. "It was a balanced practice as both the offense and defense performed well at times."
Brian Lewis, Yamar Washington and Marlin Lynch all continued to show flashes from the offensive backfield. The defensive unit was once again led by Kyle Killion on the first team and Kenny Kendal on the second team. Victor Adeyanju had a strong afternoon on the first team defensive line while Luke Stone did the same in the defensive backfield on the second team unit.
The red zone offense exceled on Saturday as John Pannozzo and Washington each scored on first down plays during a full-contact 11-on-11 drill. Jason Sullivan also looked strong receiving the ball out of the backfield. It was the first full contact drill with game officials of the spring season.
DiNardo felt progress was made with the kicking game today as the Hoosiers concluded their first week of practice.
They return to the practice fields on Tuesday afternoon.
