Putting Schoolwork Ahead of Glory

Just hours after playing key roles in the Hoosiers' CWPA Eastern Championship victory, Jessica Goldner and Krista Peterson proved why intercollegiate athletics is truly special.
While others on the plane ride home turned on their compact disc players, or flipped through the latest edition of Glamour magazine, Peterson and Goldner chose other material to read.
Goldner, fresh off perhaps the two best games of her career, opened her C146 Literature of Western Themes reading packet and began to catch up on some poems before her final next Thursday.
Of course, with the Hoosiers earning their first bid to the NCAA Championships, Indiana will leave for San Diego next Thursday on the day of her final.
Many Hoosier players are now focused on rescheduling some finals due to their bonus travel plans.
"I have a lot of school work to get done before we got to Nationals," Goldner said. "This literature class is pretty demanding, and the exam will be tough."
"Jessie," you say. "Take a break and enjoy your conference title!"
The fact is, every player on the Hoosier squad knows what they just accomplished, but they don't really know.
One seat behind Goldner is Peterson. She sits cramped in seat 8A of a small U.S. Airways jet. She's not stressing about her stats earlier in the day, even though she did have five goals and one assist, earning her tournament MVP honors in the Hoosiers' 7-5 victory over Brown.
Spread out on her tray table is an Accounting book and the ever so popular TI-86 graphing calculator.
She too has a final next Thursday night that will now have to be rescheduled. Loose-leaf papers cover the tray table as if they were new flooring for a birdcage.
Go figure. The Eastern Championship tournament MVP pulling out the books after the biggest game of her life.
See the thing is, is that even though these two sophomores just came off career performances, they still had their priorities straight. It wasn't so striking as it was refreshing to see college athletes open the books - tough and intense books on this occasion - and focus on their studies.
Sunday was just one of many examples of how strong this Hoosier water polo team is, both athletically and academically. Both in the pool and in the classroom, the Hoosiers have been as intense as ever in 2003.
