Hoosiers Named All-Americans

Senior Kristin Stanford and sophomore Krista Peterson were named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association Thursday. Stanford earned second-team honors, while Peterson was named honorable mention.
Stanford became Indiana's first and only All-American when she earned honorable mention honors in 2001, and third-team accolades last season.
This year, Stanford was the lone player listed among the three All-American teams that attended a school outside of California, proving the dominance of the Western water polo at the collegiate ranks.
Stanford and Peterson are just two of nine players listed among the 35 All-Americans, which includes honorable mention honorees, who do not compete on the West coast.
"First and foremost, it was well deserved for each of these girls," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "Both Kristin and Krista had a year that was indicative of 'All-American' play. I feel the rest of the coaches both realized and recognized that. I think it's also an indication of how well each of those players made each other."
In true All-American fashion, Stanford turned in yet another stellar season. Stanford, Indiana's all-time scoring leader, netted an Indiana record six goals in a game twice this year, and broke her own single-season scoring record for the third time in her career with 73 goals. The Cincinnati, Ohio native, who was honored to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament second team, ended her illustrious career at IU with 246 career goals.
"I feel that this is a fitting end to Kristin Stanford's storied career," King said. "She has set the standard for every single player that competes at Indiana."
Without question, Peterson clearly increased her stock for All-American honors towards the latter part of the season.
Coming off an impressive 54-goal freshman season in 2002, Peterson matched her freshman scoring total in 2003, and put the final coat of polish on an outstanding sophomore campaign, by being named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament first team. The Portland, Ore., native became the first East Coast player ever to earn first team accolades in the three-year history of the NCAA Championship. And of the Hoosiers four goals at the NCAA Championship, Peterson scored three and assisted on the other.
For Peterson, it was her second consecutive outstanding performance in a championship setting. At the CWPA Eastern Championships, Peterson recorded five goals and one assist in the win over Brown in the final. For her efforts, Peterson was named tournament most valuable player.
"In the second half of the season, and especially in the championship season, Krista was a great player for us," King said. "Particularly in the Eastern Championships and at the Final Four. She really established herself as a top-level player."
And the sixth-year Hoosier coach also notes that 2003 was the year for Indiana water polo. IU won its first conference championship and earned the coveted East Coast berth to the NCAA Championships - a first for Indiana.
"For both of them to receive recognition is really special for our program, but it's also well deserved," King said. "I think that people are starting to respect our program, and that this is an indication of where this program is going. I also feel that some people across the country are starting to realize that we have good players, we continue to recruit good players, and these players are getting better and moving the program forward once they get there."
