Bashore Receives Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award

Bloomington, Ind. - Sophomore field hockey player Kayla Bashore (Shoemakersville, Penn./Hamburg) received the 2002-03 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award. A total of 23 Big Ten student-athletes, representing different Conference Universities, have been named as recipients. Bashore was the only recipient from Indiana University to receive the accolade.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards are sponsored by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine. To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must be a person of minority ethnic background, have maintained a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and have demonstrated a record of campus or community service.
Bashore led the Hoosiers in the midfield, contributing on the offensive and defensive ends of the field. Bashore was a starter in all 19 games, and was second on the team in points, recording three goals and three assists, good enough for nine points. This past season Bashore was named Second Team All-Region, First Team All-Big Ten, Academic All-Big Ten and was a member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
