Dane Fife Rejoins Hoosier Staff

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --Former Indiana basketball standout Dane Fife is returning to Bloomington to work with the Hoosier staff, IU head coach Mike Davis announced today. Fife, who spent the 2002-03 season with the Gary Steelheads of the CBA, is scheduled to begin his new role July 1.NCAA rules allow each institution to have no more than three full-time assistant coaches, so Fife will assist with some of the staff's administrative duties.
Davis feels that Fife's on-court approach as a player is indicative of his value to the program.
"You always knew what you were going to get out of Dane Fife in a game," Davis said. "He went out every game and fought, and it was a habit for him to do that. His toughness as a player was a big part of our success, and we're very happy to have him back in our program."
The defensive catalyst behind Indiana's 2001-02 Big Ten co-champion and Final Four team, Fife broke the Hoosiers' career steals record (180) en route to league co-Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. Fife also ranks among the Hoosiers' all-time top 20 in assists (307) and three-pointers (99), and his .478 three-point field goal percentage in 2001-02 is sixth on IU's single-season list. Fife also holds Indiana's single-season record for games started (37) and is tied for sixth in career games played (131).
Fife was the Gary Steelheads' first round pick in the 2002 CBA Draft and started five of the 34 games in which he played last season. He averaged 3.4 points and one rebound per game.
