Bloomington, Ind. - Former Indiana quarterback Tommy Jones signed a rookie free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jones, who grew up a Bengals fan in Eaton, Ohio, finished his career at Indiana by splitting time as Indiana's starting quarterback during his senior year. Jones completed 75 of his 152 pass attempts for 879 yards and nine touchdowns. Jones started four games in 2002 (the first two of the season and the last two of the season), and contributed to the Hoosiers establishing a school record for passing yards in a season (3,020 yards).
The 6-5, 241-pound Jones made his first career start against N.C. State as a junior after spending much of his career playing behind Antwaan Randle El.
After earning the starting quarterback spot during Indiana's 2002 fall camp, Jones led the Hoosiers to a 25-17 win over William & Mary in the season opener.
Jones is the fifth player on last year's Indiana roster to catch on with an NFL team, as fellow quarterback Gibran Hamdan was a draft pick of the Washington Redskins, offensive lineman Enoch DeMar signed a rookie free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns, offensive lineman Bobby Brandt signed a rookie free agent deal with the New York Jets and defensive lineman Kris Dielman signed a rookie free agent deal with the San Diego Chargers.
