BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In addition to earning first-team All-America honors this season, Indiana junior golfer Karen Dennison was selected a first-team Verizon Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A member of the Women's Division I At-Large team, Dennison joins an elite group of IU athletes to garner both Academic and Athletic All-America honors in the same season.
Dennison, who hails from Madison, Ind., won a share of the 2003 Big Ten Championship individual title in addition to three other medalist honors during the season. She had 10 top-10 finishes in the 11 events she competed in and her stroke average of 73.94 this season was just 0.2 shy of the school record, which was set by Erika Wicoff in 1995. Dennison also became just the third women's golfer in IU history to earn first-team All-America honors when she was honored by the National Golf Coaches' Association for her play in 2003.
The Women's At-Large team included 45 Division I student-athletes from the sports of Crew, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Ice Hockey, Rifle, Swimming and Tennis. Dennison was one of eight golfers on the three 15-member teams.
Dennison is the 13th IU student-athlete in history to be named a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American and the first since Kimiko Hirai (Women's Swimming & Diving) in 1996. She is also the second Hoosier athlete in as many years to be named an Academic All-American as men's soccer player Colin Rogers garnered second-team accolades for the 2001-02 year.
In addition to Dennison, three other student-athletes from the Big Ten Conference appeared on the team, Michigan State swimmer Stephanie Anisko (first team), Minnesota swimmer Dana Baum (third team) and Michigan gymnast Janessa Grieco (third team).
Thiry-five Hoosier student-athletes have been honored a total of 45 times as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Indiana's all-time first-team Verizona/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans are listed on the next page:
