Kennard Jones An All-Star

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Former Hoosier baseball player and current Ft. Wayne Wizard Kennard Jones has been named a starter for the Midwest League All-Star game. Jones will play centerfield for the Eastern Division Team on Tuesday, June 17, at West Michigan's Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock, Mich.
Jones was named the Big Ten Tri-Player of the Year in 2002 and was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the Major League Draft following the season. He is currently hitting .310 with a home run, 20 RBI, 10 doubles, 35 walks and 13 stolen bases for the Wizards, a Single-A affiliate of the Padres. At the time of All-Star selections, Jones ranked third in the League with a .410 on-base percentage and 36 runs scored.
At Indiana, Jones was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in his only season. He led the Big Ten Conference regular season in hitting with a .411 overall average, 88 hits and 72 runs scored. He was second with 22 stolen bases. In Big Ten play, Jones holds the IU single-season records for games played (29), at bats (116) and ranks second in runs scored (30) and hits (46). Originally from Beltsville, Md., Jones played the 2002 season at IU after two seasons at Wallace State Community College. He signed a contract with the Padres after his junior season.
