Bloomington, Ind. -- After enjoying the best season in Indiana water polo to date, the Hoosiers were recognized by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for their work in the classroom. Senior Kristin Stanford, junior Melissa Pietras and freshman Emily Schmitt were recognized on All-Academic teams as well.
"It has always been our goal as a program to produce the finest student-athletes that we can and academic performance has always been important to us," said Indaina head coach Barry King. "Melissa, Kristin and Emily's performance in the classroom is just another statement as to how we hold that as a priority, and we are very proud of them."
The Hoosiers earned All-Academic Team Honors for an accumulative team grade point average of over 2.75. The Hoosiers team cumulative GPA was 3.10. For the first time in the six years of the program, the Hoosiers advanced to the NCAA Championships by winning the CWPA Eastern Championships. Indiana finished the year with a 26-11 record.
The CWPA All-Academic team for individual athlete honors is divided into three different categories. The three levels are Excellent (3.2-3.4 GPA), Superior (3.41-3.7) and Outstanding (3.71-4.0). The qualification for CWPA All-Academic standing is that a player must be a starter or major contributor, while also maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA.
Stanford showed her excellence in both the classroom and the pool during her career at Indiana. She was on the Excellent All-Academic list while working on her Masters Degree. Stanford graduated last season with her degree in exercise science. The Cincinnati, Ohio product also rewrote the Hoosier record books and leaves the school as its all-time leading scorer with 246 goals. She is also a two-time All-American, while being the only Eastern player to be listed as a first, second or third-team selection this past year. She was a second-team choice this year and a third-team pick in 2002.
Pietras was listed in the Excellent honor distinction of the CWPA All-Academic team. The Hudsonville, Mich., native saw action in all 37 matches for the Hoosiers in 2003. She ranked second on the team in assists with 26 and third on the team in scoring with 31 goals. Pietras ranks in the top 10 in career goals (10th with 78 goals), assists (6th with 66 goals) and steals (10th with 80 steals).
Schmitt was named to the Superior All-Academic Team in her first season as a Hoosier. She was the only freshman to play in all 37 matches for the Hoosiers. The Beaverton, Ore., native scored 22 goals, dished out 24 assists and had 35 steals on the season.
