BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The USA Today and American Volleyball Coaches Association released its preseason Division I Coaches Top 25 on Monday and Indiana, who received three votes, was one of 43 teams nationally to receive votes in the poll. Defending NCAA champion Southern California is ranked first, while Minnesota, who resides in the sixth spot, was the highest ranking team in the Big Ten Conference.
In addition to Indiana (No. 43) and Minnesota, Penn State (No. 11), Wisconsin (No. 17), Ohio State (No. 18), Michigan State (No. 25), and Michigan (No. 37) were the other Big Ten teams recognized in the poll. The USA Today/AVCA Top 25 differed from the Big Ten Coaches Preseason Poll, which selected Indiana fifth, Wisconsin sixth, and Michigan seventh. In 2002, eight Big Ten squads earned NCAA Tournament berths.
In addition to its Big Ten opponents, Indiana, who has made three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last five years, will also face three non-conference opponents who received votes in the preseason poll, a list that includes Miami, Fla. (No. 26), Notre Dame (No. 30), South Carolina (No. 40).
Indiana opens its season vs. Kent State at the Miami (Fla.) Tournament on Friday, August 29. The tournament field includes Indiana, Kent State, Manhattan, and Miami, the latter two of whom the Hoosiers will face on Saturday, August 30, in Coral Gables.
