Grodek's Goal Lifts Hoosiers in Exhibition Win

Bloomington, Ind.-- Junior Kim Grodek scored the Hoosiers’ game-winning goal after connecting on a penalty kick in an exhibition game with Indiana State played at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday.
The penalty kick came after freshman Carrie DeFreece drew a foul in the penalty box at the 80:27 mark. Grodek then set up for the kick, and sailed it nicely into the net over the Sycamore’s goalkeeper, Carey Patton.
“Obviously Carrie (DeFreece) had a great run in the middle, and she is the one that produced the goal," said Grodek. “ I was just the one to take (the penalty kick), and I got it in. Carrie did a great job of getting forward and into the box. We really need people like that.”
The Hoosiers dominated the Sycamores on the offensive end, outshooting their opponent 26-1, with three of those shots on goal.
The game was physical and very aggressive, as both teams combined tallied 29 fouls.
The first half of the match was filled with several solid-scoring opportunities for the Hoosiers. One of the closest goals came after sophomore Robin Barker took a pass from freshman Missy Vierling and drilled a shot to the far right corner. The shot was inches from getting past the goalkeeper.
The two coaches agreed to play a full 90-minute game as well as two overtime periods to give all the players a chance to play.
Head coach Mick Lyon was proud of the Hoosiers and happy they were able to pick up their second win during their preseason.
“We hoped to accomplish a lot of things today playing an extended game, and we were able to get a lot of things done," said Lyon. “We got everybody in the game, which is one of the reasons we played 120 minutes. The only way you can evaluate players or help them is to get them on the field.”
Lyon felt the Hoosiers’ passing and shooting was much improved from Friday’s game.
“We wanted to take a step forward from Friday where we played well and created some chance, but we wanted to do a little better job selecting how we were going to go at the goal. We took a step forward. We created better chances, and we looked to shoot a little bit more," added Lyon.
Indiana will be back in action on Aug. 29 – 31st when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. and take part in the Florida Atlantic Invitational featuring the Univ. of Miami and Florida Atlantic. The Hoosiers play Miami on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Following Friday’s game they face FAU on Sunday at 11 a.m..
