Hoosiers Tie Rutgers, 1-1, in Exhibition Match

FT. WAYNE, Ind. -- In its second and final 2003 exhibition match, Indiana forged a 1-1 tie with Rutgers in Ft. Wayne, Ind., at the IPFW Soccer Showcase on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Ft. Wayne product Pat Yates scored a pass from redshirt freshman Josh Tudela to even things up with just 23 seconds remaining in regulation. Because the match was just an exhibition, overtime was not played.

In the first half, Indiana controlled the field for most of the 45 minutes. The Hoosiers posted seven shots to Rutgers five. IU sophomore Trey Meek took four of those Indiana shots, including two on goal, but the match remained scoreless heading into intermission, reminiscent of the last time the Hoosiers and Scarlet Knights met in the 2002 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The match ended in a scoreless tie.

The match remained scoreless until the 78th minute when Rutgers broke through with a goal. Larry Mark converted a shot from 12 yards out on the right side to the bottom left corner to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead.

Indiana immediately kicked it up, playing with a sense of urgency. After threatening to score multiple times, the Hoosiers finally hit the back of the net in the 90th minutes with only 23 seconds to spare. Yates offering from the top of the box went past Rutgers goalie Scott Conway, salvaging a tie.

Thats what I love about this team, Yates said, everyone keeps fighting for 90 minutes. We didnt get our heads down when they scored. Wed like to have had a win, but a tie is better than a loss.

IU finished with 12 shots, including seven on goal compared to nine and five, respectively, for Rutgers. Junior goalkeeper Jay Nolly collected four saves. The Hoosiers were called offsides nine times while the Scarlet Knights were never called offsides.

Indiana lost to Kentucky, 2-1, in its exhibition opener on Friday night after a Wildcat goal with 30 seconds left in the match.

The Hoosiers will kickoff the regular season on a winning track this weekend as they host the 21st annual adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, Aug. 28-29 in Bloomington. UAB and Notre Dame will get things started on Friday at 5 p.m. and the Hoosiers will follow with a match against California at 7:30 p.m. Action continues on Saturday with Cal and Notre Dame at 5 p.m. and Indiana and UAB at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-866-IUSPORTS.
